re: money

billy,
the best is to take £'s and get them changed in the resort, I always use the Crown outside the rila on the right, its just a small shed but was the best rate. Take £50 in levs only and shop around first.

re: money

I alwys just take my ATM card - there are many ATM's in Bansko loads near the square and a few up by the 24hr bar & bowling.

Really the rates are very similar to changing at "official" places. The thing is lets say the rate is 2.25 : £1 best rate but say as your using ATM your getting 2.10:£1 (it wouldnt be anywhere near as wide as this but use this for illustration).

Say your going to spend 500levs that would cost at the best place £222.22 or at the ATM £238 a difference of £15.78 ...

Say your going to spend 500levs that would cost at the best place £222.22 or at the ATM £238 a difference of £15.78 and for that there is none of the hassle of going to the shop during its opening hours no queue and as I have said really the rate I get at ATM vs best shop is very similar so its far less than the £16 difference plus if your spending even less then the "premium" is even less actual £.

Somthing to think about plus it could be a fair bit further to walk to get to the best price plus you may have to arrange travelers chq's

Hang on - do you actuially get a better rate at an exchange than at an atm?

I didn't think you did. Charges at those kiosk places are fairly high - understandably as they have to pay for staff and a building, which the banks don't. The 1% fee charged at an atm is nothing comared to these charges (even if they say "commission free" the charge accounted for in the rate they offer).
It's the same withdrawing from ATM's - they don't exchange at the "par" rate - but I thought they were ...

I know that in Spain you'd never get as good a deal at an exchange as an ATM. Last time I was in Mallorca the "commission free" rate was 10% lower than par!

Anyone know more anout this and done a real time comparison?

Matt

re: money

I have also always used the Crown Kiosk near the Rila and have always found them a decent rate and never had to queue to change the money either. They are open for most of the time the other shops are open. Not sure what the rate in resort is at the moment though.
