natasha richardson

OMG...she died last night after the ski accident she had.
she was having a lesson with an instructor on a beginners run, fell and banged her head...she showed no visible sign of injury after the skiing accident but was brought to the bottom of the slope by a ski patrol and told she should see a doctor.

About an hour later she started feeling unwell and was taken to hospital.

she wasnt wearing a helmet!!

think that puts a close on the debate about helmets and whether they are cool ...

Frank the debate and comments featured on another thread, so if you fancy seeing those then scroll down a few threads.

I wonder if the bang triggered something that was already there, and it just happened to be a ski fall when it could have been any seemingly innocuous that could have set it off.

The post mortem examination will doubtless shed light on it, but we probably won't hear about it if it doesn't fit our media's sensationalist slant.

There was a very good piece about skiing and its dangers (or not!!) on the BBC website. Basically saying that more injuries occur in football matches and that there is no outcry about that.

I bought a helmet on my last day in Pamporovo this year and used it in Mayrhofen last month, After the initial oddness of having one on, it became a quite normal to wear it. I had a fall on the first day, had the back of a two chair lift smack me a good one, so all in all day one showed me the values of wearing a helmet good and proper. Another problem for head bangs is when you wear a backpack, you naturally sit forward on a lift when the foot rest comes down - whack !!!

All the years of taking the mickey out of helmet wearers - I take it all back.
I would advise everyone to go down the helmet wearing road - you never know what's around the corner.
I think you are all with me when I send my deepest condolences to Natasha's family.

Confused i was fuming on the way into work this morning when i heard Graham Bells comments, i have a lot of respect for him as a skier but what he said was on a par with those stupid comments the pope made the other day.
Basically he said he was too good to fall, and thought helmets were a hindrance from hearing the person who might run into him!! arrogant or what!, ive seen some very accomplished skiers fall, for a variety of reasons, but to say you are better off without a helmet!! sorry but ...

Yes, Fraser, it was stupid, and I bet the person interviewing him didn't challenge his comments.

re: natasha richardson

At the speeds he is likely to ski at, if somebody is going to hit him without him hearing that person, then that person must be coming from behind at a much faster speed - wearing or not wearing a helmet won't make any difference !!! Completely idiotic statement from Mr. Bell.
Strange that the top downhill skiers all wear helmets, therefore I can only conclude that the arrogant Mr. Bell was never in that class to start with !!!

Is it Bell that presents Ski Sunday and High Altitude, he always seems to be wearing a helmet on tv, I feel a bit sorry for Natasha Richardson's ski instructor, he too must be feeling dreadful.
