Samakov is OK make sure you keep your room door locked at all times even when in the room. We were robbed last year whilst I was in the bath. Never heard a thing!
Had a top time at the Samokov last year. Enjoy the pancakes in reception. Never saw or heard of any theft but vigilance is probably wise as with anywhere.
Just got back from a week in the Samokov... Pretty good, and would stay there again. Only complaint was the ventilation (or lack of) in the toilet... take an air freshener!! Food was pretty good and plenty of choice. Girlfriend is a Veggie and ate well each day. Was worried about the location on the first day as it was a 10 min trek up the main road to the nursery slopes (difficult when it's your first time in ski boats and with skis and it's a bit icy!!)... but that wasn't a problem ...

Was worried about the location on the first day as it was a 10 min trek up the main road to the nursery slopes (difficult when it's your first time in ski boats and with skis and it's a bit icy!!)... but that wasn't a problem when you're used to it (and you're much closer to the gondala than the Rila). Never had a problem with security (but then I do lock my case every day within my room) - never used the safety deposit boxes and was OK. Water was always hot, as was the room. Bit noisy on the Saturday night when we arrived (not sure where it was coming from) - I guess it depends on the room you have whether it's noisy or not - I always take foam earplugs wherever I go just in case!! We arrived at 10pm after transfer and they'd kept the restaurant open for food (OK, only chicken as a main course option, but was plesantly surprised anyway). And the important thing... 4lv for a large beer - appeared to be the same as in other bars we went in.
My boyfriend and I have just got back from a week at the Smakov. We had a fantastic holiday!! The rooms were clean and warm (too warm somtimes, had to open the balcony door at night!), the water was hot (altough when we had showers the floor flooded a bit). Channel 3 on the radio provided some cheesy tunes while gettin ready to go out!! We didn't like the food much in the hotel, ate there for the first few days but found it cheaper and more fun to eat out. The booze prices in the hotel were ...

The booze prices in the hotel were a bit higher than in the bars outside but still cheap by UK standards.
