ski bag for plane

looking to take ski gear with me when I go to boro in feb and am looking for a single ski bag that carries boots and ski's... flying with easy jet and was wondering if anyone takes there ski bag as there hold bag? I imagine if your bag is under the 20 kg then it shouldn't matter what's inside as long as it weighs the same as a normal bag?

does anyone get away this when they go?

Taking skis into the cabin of a plane? Not a chance.
Can you imagine the mayhem of 200 people trying to get seated all carrying skis?

Boots maybe - but skis - dont even think about it.

We bought board bags that carry our skis and our boots plus some gear. Never had a problem with this but they must of course go in the hold.

Cool

re: ski bag for plane

haha thanks pete, maybe i never explained that properly... I wouldn't expect to get my ski's on the plane, i meant take a ski holdall with you but as your hold bag and not pay for the sport equipment.

never thought of a board bag... is it ok strapping them in as i thought they would be designed for one wide board?

Don't do it mate! You used to be able to get away with this occasionally (10 years ago) but not any more. They don't let you call a ski/board bag your hold luggage. If you try this then they'll charge you the increased price for sports equipment carriage at the airport and probably not refund you for your unused hold bag as well.
Unfortunately there isn't a way around this that I know of. £50 per return flight is absolutely ridiculous but I think you have to either lump it or use a premium ...

Yes the airlines are quick to find places where they can make a quick buck - Especially Ryan Air. I don`t take skis anymore because of the fees AND the wait in the airport for them to come through. I hire in resort, I have usually found the kit to satisfactory and you can always change it if not satisfied. I was a bit worried about Bulgaria but I understand their hire kit is as good as any others.

No fear on the standard of hire equipment here in Bansko, especially from Ulen, the operator.. I have drooled over the £1000's worth of new skis this season, real lush looking Salomon twin tip all mountain in the VIP, carver slalom rental skis are sweet to... Even the local hires update their kit, the small rental we recommend opposite the gondola has invested in new Atomic carvers, Fischer RC4's, and new boots.. and he will allow you to store overnight free, so you can drop your skis/boots ...

We always packed our ski bags out with other kit when we used to fly, but never had it accepted as main luggage, granted in the day you were only paying £12 for ski carriage... Wink

thanks matt, I would rather pay the excess in the grand scheme of things £50 carriage is not much to pay when the whole reason to go on holiday is to ski... Never took ski equipment with me before always rented so was just looking to cram a few bits in a ski holdall and take hand luggage. Seems there on to it now though!

steve, last time in boro my first day and a half was ruined going back and forth changing boots and ski's... got it sorted in the end ended up with decent gear but wont ...

re: ski bag for plane

You can definitely pack your clothes and stuff in your ski bag and check that in, and then take hand luggage - but the piece you pay for has to be down as sports equipment and not ordinary hold luggage.
I'm not saying I wouldn't ever pay the £50, but I still think it's too much. There's no way it costs them this much to carry the stuff. I often go on trips just for the weekend, and it makes it far more expensive to own your own skis than hire them. Obviously owning your own has benefits ...
