how exactly is the depth of snow measured? is there some sort of fancy equation using length of piste, number of measurements etc or do they just stick a ruler in the snow?
They use a laser which is situated on top of the chair lift base (at the bottom of the Rila hill). This beams over to the slope and bounces up to the Rila. The depth is worked out by the distance less the reflected distance, the reflected distance only works if there is snow on the ground (as it is white).
I believe that a cubic metre of air is measured using the matheuis scale , this takes into consideration ambient temperature and the type of snow flake ( each flake has a specific density ). The flakes are counted and individuallyy by some poor Bulgarian bugger. Wind speed and direction are sometimes considered!!!!!
I met him actually, his name is Roger, he was in the middle of counting when I went and said hello. He chased me down the hill with a spade. When I walked back over I heard... "1...2...3..."
