snowboard/skate helmets

Hi,
I am having trouble getting a snowboard helmet for my son (OK, I have left it too late as we go tomorrow ). Would a skateboard helmet be better than nothing. I think the only real difference is that it doesnt cover the ears, which may be a little chilly! At least it could be used at home. Or would it be really naf and the sort of thing only an embarrassing mother would make you do.
