Hi, just trying to find out about the route from plovdiv to bansko in late dec 08. We have a baby with us so for safety reasons any advice would be great thanks.
its about three to three and a half hours, this depends on wether you have a coach or a mini bus. there is a stop half way but the place our bus stopped was very smokey and I wouldnt take a baby in there, as Dan has said if you can get a flight to Sofia its about a two and a half hour journey but the roads seemed better than the plodiv route.
As for saftey all the buses I have been on out there have had seat belts and been modern, the drivers have always been carful so no problems there, ...

Sam, I smile at the road stop cafe/bar being smokey, the whole of Bansko is a fog of smoke, we couldn't have the windows open in the hotel at night for the stench of wood smoke drifting in, it made us laugh that we had booked a none smoking room, still we love the place
Having just returned from Bansko with our baby (8 months old) I have to agree that the drivers were careful and happy to stop whenever we needed to. They didn't have car seats in the mini buses but I just kept the baby in a sling and I wore the seat belt so he was safe.

Bankso on the other hand was difficult with a baby. Eating out was difficult due to the fact that people smoke inside restaurants, the pavements were difficult to negotiate with a pram and due to the vast amount on construction pushing the pram in the road meant that you were either covered in dust by passing lorries or hooted at by them and also baby food and nappies were expensive (so take your own).
On the plus side every one there absolutly loves babies and I lost count of the number of people that gave him a sweet and a cuddle!
I can certainly recommend the driver that we used. He was an extremely careful driver. We had 3 kids and he provided a seat for our 3 yr old. He has young kids himself so provided you let him know what age your kids are I'm sure he'll have a seat to suit. He lives in Plovdiv. Our daughter tends to be a bit travel sick sometimes and i was worried how she'd be on the road to Pamporovo but I needn't have worried - his driving was so steady she didn't even feel queasy.

Like I said - he came highly recommended, and would certainly endorse that.
I like the smell of the wood smoke, adds to the whole experience. It was the cigarette smoke in the bar at the stop off point, On saying that the bars and restaurants in the village weren't that bad.
ditto the wood smoke
my parents have a wood fire and I love it too, something very rural and relaxing about it! MInd you I can't stand cigarette smole filled bars somehow that is different!
