two way radios

hi for the last few years now i have seen more and more people with, two way radios on the mountain. And maybe thinking this is the way to go, (and not have a big moblie bill at the end of the holls). is this a good idea? what do they cost?

re: two way radios

I got mine at Argos £49.50 for a BT Freeway walkie talkie - lots of different channels (like 60 or so) and even have a built in FM radio.

Used them with my scouts at camp - during activities I sent them off on their own and they were one side of the 42 acre site, we were the other. No problems with transmission through quite dense woodland.

re: two way radios

i got myself some radios from The Link mobile phone shop for about 30 quid. They've got a 2 mile range and have used them for ski-ing quite a few times. loads of channels and hands free kits as well

re: two way radios

2 way radios are good but the signals don't travel over mountains so if one of you is in a valley and the other person in another valley then its no go. But is you are on the same side of the mountain then no problem. Only get radios with a minimum of 5 km transmission stength and be prepared to talk to stangers.
