cat has got my tongue is right. big group of us go ever year. group of friend for collage. half irish and the rest made up of sco and english. have gone to all the resort over the last few years. first of all it has got way to dear. way over the top. bansko this year was a joke. 2 of ur group got rob and beat up and because they were english the cop`s did not give a toss......then the hotel were we wear staying round 15 english fella`s had a fight in the pub and wreck the place. kid`s there and all. its not on..... is that enough or should i go on ..........

Ski king, so it's the fighting in the bars that pish you off, no mention of the mountain, snow conditions, lift queues, I suspect all that was fine were you on a ski/snowboard holiday or just a cheap beer cruise up?

the snow was gud. the lifts were not to bad but the gondola was close for round 5 hour`s because of wind and another morning it broke down. for what i don`t know but we were on it for round 2 half hours. my frineds that got beat up were hurt. we had to go to sofa with 1 fella. he need a op on he`s arm.
and for the last message is yes the irish can drink and we had a few in the same hotel as us, but they were nice. only talk to them once. me and the girlfriend had ur son with us so sayed in the hotel at nite........

must admit if one of my group got beaten up, It would put me off going back again. As for bulgaria being to dear yes its gone up a lot, but still very cheap when compared to alps,
As for being robed I know loads of people who claim to be robed and mugged on hols, when it all comes out they were so drunk thay cant remember what happened, not saying thats the case here but I think a lot of places get a name for this because people simply leave wallets, cameras ect in pubs or drop them then claim they were robed for the insurance.

I was in Sydney once and after watching a rugby match me and my mates were in a pub where a massive fight broke out! One of my mates got punched! Therefore, I recomend no one ever goes to Australia, what a bad place! ehh.... duh!!!
I think I will just stay at home from now on and wrap myself in cotton wool!

I wasnt talking about the whole country, just resorts if I saw a lot of trouble it would put me off, although having been to bulgaria 4 times both winter and summer, I have never seen any trouble.

Personally I have never seen any trouble in any holiday resort in any Med country Ive visited nor the Canaries.
And thats even including countless nights strolling in at 8am.... from the clubs.
Having gone to Uni in Cardiff and down there so often these days its supposed to be one of the worst places for fighting - however in all my 12 years of going there I have not Once seen any fighting nor been involved & I go to any pub not just the posh ones I quite like dingy old fashioned ones.
From reading th above I would have made a formal complaint to the hotel Manager to kick out those who had been fighting not just for the night but the resot of their stay.
Also have to agree with you IF I had been in a situation like you describe it would put me off (and clearly anyone with any sense it would put them off & there are many other places to go to visit).

Have just read through this and it does make me chuckle how people say they will never go anywhere again because they saw a fight.
If that is the case, that probably means that they won't venture into the towns where they live on a Saturday night ever again.
I remember going skiing in Austria 20 years ago and seeing a fight, started by the locals I might add, but it didn't mean I wouldn't go to Austria ever again.
It's daft to think like that!

two fights in 1 week and 1 in the pub of the hotel whice took round 10 bar staff and 1 cop to stop and kids with there mothers and fathers in that bar. ya its a great spot.great place to bring ur family

Fights happen everywhere and anywhere, go to any town centre in the UK on a Friday or Saturday night and you will see a fight somewhere. So if I where you I just would never go out again incase I saw another fight.

Just another reason to stay in a villa just outside a ski resort. Choose your own company and restaurants to use .Lots of skiers are now using their own chalets and rooms in our village of Momchilovtsi as its cheaper [beer .35 p bottle of mine £3 and a meal £3] Also you get the choice of traditional Rhodopi live music and friendly Bulgarian company or a £5 taxi ride to the resort of Pamporovo and enjoy the entertainment of your choice.

The reality is that things are changing and changing quickly in regards to bulgaria.
Demand has increased year on year, however the infrastructure has not.
Prices have escalated dramatically, and for a lot of seasoned bulgarian travellers, the value is no longer there.
This is not a dig at the bulgarian people or the country itself, however i am in the same boat, whereby we usually had a group of 25-30 travel on an annual basis. This stopped this year after horrid experiences of Bansko

I understand exactly what you are saying...I, like you and many others on this board, will not be going back. I did not witness any loutish behaviour or fighting when I was in Bulgaria but there were many other factors that influenced my decision. These reasons are the same as what you talked about.
I don't quite understand why everyone jumped so defensively on your comment about being beaten up and seeing a fight. Yes it does happen, always has and always will when alchohol is involved but you did not say, that, that was the only reason for you to stay away. I'm sorry to hear that your holiday wasn't the best.

thanks for that muddyboots... i know fights happen every were but it was just a bit of a build up that push us as a group over the top. maybe its just us. its just this years holiday was like work from the moment we got to bansko... like haven to go to sofia to c a doc about my friends arm is a bit much, long spin in a taxe..... would not like to c if somebody was badly hurt what would happen

Like I said We did not see any loutish behaviour or fights but I have read lots of other reports of fights and tourists getting beaten and robbed by bouncers. So no, it looks like it wasn't just you lot...unfortunately.

I think, reading this post through, that Ski King is one of our continental cousins who are used to going out for a drink of an evening without getting his head kicked in, quite reasonable I would have thought, so really can't see why anyone would disagree with him having less than a glowing recommendation of Bansko based on his experiences. From my own experience, never had any trouble in Bulgaria, but then we are exhausted after skiing, and in bed for midnight, so probably miss all that over the top, alchohol fulled, high spirits.

Having been to Bulgaria skiing quite a few times now - I often pop into this discussion board to see what is going on...but I don't usually leave a message...until now. I am FED UP with the 'locals' trying to make the 'sometimes posters' feel stupid for expressing their opinions.
Everyone is entitled to an opinion and the whole point of the board is to let others know of your experiences. It seems to me that any negative remarks (which are as useful for potential visitors as the positive ones) are jumped on and defended by those that either live out there or quite obviously own property out there.
If someone goes to the effort of writing on the board then they obviously feel strongly about what they are writing and the constant, smarmy condescending remarks from the people that spend all year posting on this board is just really annoying...let the people speak and stop trying to make them look like fools for telling their story!
Personally, Ski King, I make you right not to want to go back to BG - and so do most people who went this year - the reason that this is not so apparent is that these discussions are padded out by the same people day in day out...they do this to make it look like there are more of them than us - but it is not true and the truth will out next year!

I'm sorry you had a bad experience in Bansko. We've bought an apartment there and have been twice so far although the apartment is STILL not completely finished. Perhaps we have been lucky - we have met some great Bulgarians who couldn't do enough to help. I agree that Bansko is a building site at the moment and I just hope they don't overdo it. It is definitely an ongoing project 5-10 years but hopefully by then it will be much different.
It is still a "young" country and they have a lot to learn but I'm sure they will.
The new ski lift has just got official confirmation and will make a big difference.
What hotel did you stay in Ski King?

Don't go. There is a website bulgariaski.com and if you write anything negative about any Bulgarian resort on the threads, your post is deleted and you are prevented from writing anything else on the website in future, it happened to me. It's so they can trick you into coming to Bulgaria and that alone pretty much sums up this place. I could go on a big rant about this resort, how disapointing it is, what a rip off it is, how it is not one bit cheap etc etc but I won't as it has been done so extremely accurately from the previous posts.

Went first week of March 08 and I want a refund from Crystal Ski. It was an absolutely awful experience. Word of warning to anyone who is contemplating a ski trip here, if you have been to the Alps, Canada, US or any PROPER ski resorts, simply do not go. I read a lot of reviews on this website before I went and although a lot were quite negative, I had an open mind and expected to be pleasantly surprised, instead I left vouching never to return........
......... I may seem negative but this review is not aimed at those WEIRD PEOPLE that seem to love this resort but those who have experienced proper skiing and proper facilities. If you are thinking of booking here do not do it, a bit more research than I had done can get you a deal to the Alps for the same price or even cheaper. Believe me, the disappointment is not worth it, I now have to wait until next year for my next ski trip, something I am still so disappointed about....... AND ON AND ON

Im sad to see so many negatives on here but i must say if the ski resorts are so bad then i think people are right to say there never going back, I used to go out for a drinkin our local town center, but i dont go now, dont want to be associated with such shamefull Behaviour, its the same with holiday resorts, skiing or beach, if a resort was full of drunks fighting English of foreign then that resort is not for me.
Dont tell me im wrong, its my opinion and i have a right to it as does ski king.
Perhaps its something the people who run these resorts can rectify but if they dont more people will be saying to themselves "not for me"

used to go - your views are very valid - drunks are spoiling many places in the world. I hope they are very careful in Moscow if they go for the final and can afford the drinks. It seems to be the only place left in 'Europe' that still deals firmly/harshly with any antisociable behaviour.
Ski King is entitled to his opinion - it was the way the original postings were made (which has been deleted due to offensive language) that made people respond the way they did.

Sounds to me like that could be regarded as offensive to many people, particularly Bulgarians as they have to live there so your last posting is inaccurate.
I've actually been to your part of the world and that's nothing to shout about. I would rather go back to Bulgaria but hey........ that's just my opinion. I don't really like the place it is becoming either.

A very commendable finale to your post Ski King. Be aware through that both you and I have the same disappointed view of Bulgaria and neither of us are likely to return. I don't think everyone is getting on your back, I just think that everyone has different feelings regarding their experiences with the place.
I wish you good skiing in the 2008/2009 season.
