planning a skiing holiday on new year's eve

Hi,

We are planning to go on a skiing holiday between the 27th December and the 3rd January and thought we might choose Bulgaria. Since it's our first time i need some tips on which is the best resort between bansko, borovets or pamporovo. We're going to be 3 couples and 2 kids however we would like to go to a resort that has nightlife, restaurants & shopping !!! Any recommendations??

Vanessa,
i cant comment on the other resorts as i haven't been there. But Bansko is a great destination with some great runs and spectaculur scenary up the mountains.

Queues will be long as it is peak season, Bansko is like a building site, but getting better year on year. Loads more bars springing up, great local restaurants also.

I have been to bansko 4 or 5 times, with the lads and with the family. Nightlife meets the expectations for both.

Best regards

Hi Vanessa

I have to recommend Borovets, but i haven't been to the other resorts, although you will find other people love Bansko and Pamps!

In Boro the lower slopes are in resort and a new chair lift and extra snow cannons on the Yastrebets slope made a big improvement last year.

The resort is lively, I've been several times with the girls and had a fab time. This year i took husband and kids and they enjoyed it too. There are some lovely restaurants and bars.

Please dont forget ...

Please dont forget this is Bulgaria, not a European ski resort. I know its been said loads of times but if you go with an open mind, dont expect too much and considerer the cost of a holiday to Bulgaria compared to France. Hopefully you'll be pleasently surprised.

Only been to bansko, but we did go last new year so thought my comments may be worth a post.

Absolutely love the place, been skiing a few times now but not the most advanced skiers. Bansko does keep us busy but to be honest we go for the full package and not just great skiing.

In saying this New Year was very very busy at the gondola ie 2 hour waits at the gondola station were common place. Once on the mountain it wasn't too busy (this included not all the runs being open) and ...

In saying this New Year was very very busy at the gondola ie 2 hour waits at the gondola station were common place. Once on the mountain it wasn't too busy (this included not all the runs being open) and actually was a pretty good atmosphere.

My main tip would be to rent gear from one of the huts that opens half an hour or so before the gondola, get your gear early and then go and wait at the gondola for it to open. This does mean getting up early but will probably cut your waiting time to about half an hour.

All in all as a party of six we were really pleased with our New Year holiday, we were really lucky with the conditions as half way through it snowed for about two days solid but I'm not sure I'd rush back at this time due to the que situation.

We have been at other times when you can just walk straight up to the gondola and get straight on.

Hope this helps

Daniel

Mr. Mr. is spot on word-for-word.

Recently new years eve has not been good for skiing in Bulgaria with the better snow conditions coming much later.

Cool

re: planning a skiing holiday on new year's eve

Hi All
Just picked up this thread - got to tell you I have a "vested interest" in as much as I'm with the English Instructors Ski Team here in Borovets. That apart, email me with any unanswered questions and I'll give you impartial answers as best I can. No expectation you'll put any biz our way. It's important that all who come to Borovets find what they want - so they'll want to come back again!
