ive booked a long weekend away in borovets on the 2/12/10
but i have been reading that the ski lifts dont open untill the 15/12/10 and that the best time to go is jan - april
The lifts will be closed at the beginning of December / when you're here, so you probably want to change your booking if you were planning to come here to ski....
It's a bit like a piece of string - 08/09 season was brilliant over xmas and new year (new snow every day) but last year snow (or lack of it) at the same time was awful and people were going walking as there was no snow to ski on!!!. March has been excellent for the last couple of years, but again, there's nothing to say it will be this year... It's really a bit of luck and hope!! Snow has gradually been getting better towards the end of the season, but there are no guarantees. ...
Jess,
It's a bit like a piece of string - 08/09 season was brilliant over xmas and new year (new snow every day) but last year snow (or lack of it) at the same time was awful and people were going walking as there was no snow to ski on!!!. March has been excellent for the last couple of years, but again, there's nothing to say it will be this year... It's really a bit of luck and hope!! Snow has gradually been getting better towards the end of the season, but there are no guarantees. January (apart from last year) has also been good, but much colder.
Sorry if that doesn't really give a definitive answer, but I don't want to tell you when to book for there to be no snow!! You should also avoid half term (if you can) as it's very busy.
I'd wait for some other people on the forum to give their opnions as well as most people have a preferred time.
If i was you leave it as late as poss, at least mid / end Jan earliest. If you can leave it till later in season i would. (In fact that's what I've done for the last 3 years and always had fab conditions, but as every one says, no guarantees ). We're all hearing the locals seem to think its gonna be a long, cold winter .......oh yes!!!!!!
I tend to go mid jan trying to avoid the queues at the end of Jan when the slopes are full with foreign public holidays. always had great conditions. I then always go with the family around feb half term. really really busy but the key to lots of skiing is as i have said before, get up early and get up on the gondola asap. chair lift from the top of gondola right to top of todorka and make new tracks in the snow all the way down red 4 to Bla Bla, feet up with a hot choc and a bit of ...

As Kas said there are no guarantees, but you can pick your times.
In my opinion ( ! ) it's like this:
Early Dec is unlikely.
Mid Dec - New year is probable for SOME skiing, but not every year, and unlikely to be the best. Go to somewhere with snow cannons!
Early Jan is probably OK, but there are times (like last year) when it's not.
End of Jan then you have to be very unlucky not to have a reasonable amount of snow.
Feb - mid March then you're as close as you can get to guaranteed ...

Feb - mid March then you're as close as you can get to guaranteed skiing. You have to be very very unlucky to have no skiing at all.
Mid March - early April should be ok but not definite.
After early April who knows. You can get lucky.
This is all dependent on resort of course - but that's how I'd put it for Bulgaria. I'm sure there will now be a load of people telling me I'm wrong! Note at all times I've used words like "likely" and "probably". There are no guarantees and freak occurances can and do happen! They were skiing in Scotland in June this year!!!
Matt
In my humble opinion Matt, you are bang on as with any resort that is below 2000 metres early and late can be risky. Early March has nearly always been a good bet as the base has built up and even a warm spell should not prevent relatively good conditions.
