Avalance In Bansko

Hi.

I was just wondering if anyone knew the extent of the avalance in Bansko, like if anyone was hurt or killed in it or if it was like a minor avalance.

I'm guessing it was minor. I've been lookin at webcams of Bunderishka Polyana... It doesn't look like devastation. It'll be interesting to see it in the morning when it's light.

We've been trying to work out where an avalanche would come from and just can't figure it out.

Hi.

It came from ... if your going up the adult drag lift on the nursery slope to the right of there, through all the trees and over the shooting range, from where they had the BIG avalanche a few years back which wipped out run 14, well the gondalo to take you to run 14.

Ahhh... I didn't know about the BIG one. Yes that makes sense.

That's not why 14's closed though is it?! My instructor told us that the slope faces the 'wrong' way and gets too much sun, melting the snow and means that it's not financially viable to run it for the time that it is skiable...

Which is the version you know?

re: Avalance In Bansko

The lift on the other side (I guess 14) is probably not working as there are so many new modern lifts. It is not for lack of snow, I think, because it is on this side that there is what used to be called a gletcher, a place where snow used to last till July.
Regarding avelances, these are quite common on that other side of the mountain, it is obvious to anybody that the slope is so steep that the snow can start going down any minute. The place is dangerous, people have actually died there ...

The place is dangerous, people have actually died there and it is very silly for people to go there. But it does not really affect the skiing area, which is on the opposite slope. Well, I hope the avelance would not go as far as Bunderitza, which is between the two slopes, there is enough even space from there to the steep hills.
Will watch tomorrow the web-cam called Bunderishka Poliana. Today it was all misty, probably horrible weather.

Well, Banderishka Polyana looks open on the webcam, phew! And the trees look like they have a nice coating of new snow Smile

It definitely looks open now. There are skiers on the slope.

Panic over.

I've stuck all the cameras onto one page so I can see everything at the same time:

re: Avalance In Bansko

My instructor and another one told me it was because the ski lift had been wipped out!
