Hi there jamesJust got back from bansko on saturday, had a fantastic time! The snow was good, the people were great, we had plenty to do.... what else could you ask for!
I'll be going again that's for sure!

I doubt that there is very much off-piste skiing at the moment in Bansko but when there the snow cover allows there is some good off-piste skiing to be had in Bansko - both in the trees and off the peak and back bowls. I would recommend hiring a guide though as it can be easy to get lost if you are not familiar with the area.
As for avalanche safety; there is no such thing as "when it is safe". An appreciation and understanding of different snow conditions only comes with ...

If you are not competent or confident then best to hire a guide and/or go on a dedicated avalanche awareness and safety course. There are quite a few around. Wearing an avalanche transciever and knowing how to use it is a good starting point though.
