BOROVETS RIP OFF

Just back from Borovets and the prices are now ridiculously high for most bars and restaurants.

As many Bulgarians have said, the operators have got mighty greedy just because they have entered the EU. Their costs have not gone up, their rent only up by 2% but prices have gone up by at least 150% since September 2007.

Most main courses are now between £8 and £12 and thats the basics without chips, vegetables etc..thats all extra.

We went off to Samakov town on 2 occasions to a restaurant where we had 1st class food, where a main course cost about £3.. a pint of beer 50p and a double vodka 38p !!! Of course we got stuffed and very very drunk Very Happy Speaking with people there, they also confirmed that the operators of Borovets decided ,amongst themselves, to hike the prices because "the British can afford it".

One Bulgarian person's theory..."Prices will go up each year until the tourist wont bother coming..then the property prices will drop and the Government will buy up all the resort then (in time for Super Borovets) open up again, realistic prices and start to make money"

Hmm...they could be right !

Bulgarians have a lot of theorys Wink thats one of the better ones! No market forces will dictate the prices, and the truth of the matter is that whilst a few years ago the Brits were by far the largest part of the tourists, this is now changing, and whilst the Brits start to suffer with the poor economy, a lot of europe and russia especially are doing better. This year has seen a vast increase on russian and former russian state tourists. So whilst we may moan, its not about us anymore, and in ...

This year has seen a vast increase on russian and former russian state tourists. So whilst we may moan, its not about us anymore, and in fact thats where most of the new property purchases are now coming from.......theyve got money and havent come here for the 'budget' holiday Booze Booze Booze

The British Tour Operators have seen a drop of 30% in tourists this year to the ski resorts. This is purely because of the bad snow last year.

Their bookings for 2008/9 are back on track to the previous years.

re: BOROVETS RIP OFF

Also, dont forget that a lot more people are 'doing their own thing' ie not using tour operators, this ahs a knock on effect all over the place, but basically means theres still a lot of people going, just not to the same places they used to Booze

re: BOROVETS RIP OFF

I didn't think it was too bad, but I won't be returning next year. I'd rather go somewhere I was guaranteed great snow.

re: BOROVETS RIP OFF

I have been 3 times with the children to bulgaria. It will be the last time year with me I'm afraid. They have already priced themselves out of the market as I have booked france for 09 a lot cheaper rate than bulgaria.
I aways booked bulgaria for the free child places in hotels (the food was always a bonus but the kids didn't each much anyway). These deals are about to stop due to the age of the children.
