After all the comments about Balkan Holidays Airlines over the last few months, I would like to add my own to say how impressed I was with them.

My girlfriend fainted about an hour and a half in to the flight to Sofia on 6th March. The stewardesses (or whatever you’re supposed to call them these days!) did a great job of giving her oxygen and helping to bring her round with ice for her head, and coke and a Mars bar for some sugar. Even with their limited English (which is 1000 times better than my Bulgarian) I felt confident that they would handle the situation and help bring her round.

I have written a note to Balkan thanking their cabin crew, to which I received a nice reply.

So, to anyone worrying about flying BH Airlines - Don’t! The plane was a normal Boeing, leg room was OK as was the snack.

The rest of the week in Bansko was great, I agree with YT and Trouble’s comments made earlier this week. Bansko is great for intermediate skiers.

And thanks to my girlfriend for giving us something to take the mickey out of her about all week!!

I work in the airling industry so I just thought I'd add my tuppence worth.

The plane we flew on (Gatwick to Sofia) was an Airbus A320, modern and looking well maintained. From an engineering point of view they're a damn good aircraft.

My friends flew in a Tupolev 154 from Manchester. The Tupolev is a much better aircraft than it is generally given credit for and my friends had a comfortable and worry free flight. One of my friends flying from Manchester has also been closely involved with aircraft and he said that the plane appeared well maintained, and certainly had no doubts about boarding the flight.

As far as the cabin crew were concerned we were all extremely pleased with the service that we received.

Whether they're replacing the fleet with Airbus or Boeings the very fact that they are doing so points to a well managed fleet that is probably getting the money spent on it that it requires. I wouldn't be surprised if the main reason for replacing the Tupolevs was western customer prejudice as much as running costs and age.
