Bansko Snow...?

Just wondering... with the lack of snow for the moment and the season kicking off in just a couple of weeks will the snow cannons be used to get the season started in bansko? and how much of the slopes do they cover? read some places 50% and others say 80%....? how effective are they likely to be given the current temperatures?

re: Bansko Snow...?

Cannons cover over 80% of the slopes, last season they completed 4 pistes and the ski road to the town ready for the opening on December 1st... The cannons have been running at night at the moment, i was up the mountain yesterday, and could see the piles of snow adjacent to the cannons... but there is a long way to go, and the weather has been very mild in the day (great mtb weather) so its in the hands of the gods really. Last season we had no appreciable snowfall till Christmas Day (70cm) ...

Last season we had no appreciable snowfall till Christmas Day (70cm) but people had been skiing since the 1st... The weather is very similar to last year really, sunny days and cold nights, so we'll have to see what happens. I'll keep everyone updated with the snow as the time draws near Razz

"Last season we had no appreciable snowfall till Christmas Day (70cm) " not sure if I am getting the context wrong, but i was in Bansko last christmas, the snow was terrible and 70cm? perhaps 5cm fell on christmas day, the total snow depth for the runs that were open i doubt very much if that was 70cm, or they would have had more than 4 runs open.

re: Bansko Snow...?

The snow machine snow is crap, but its something to slide down. Which is better than sitting at home watching TV - just. Use rentals skis as the piste bashers tend to plough up dirt and stones when they try and scrape the thin layer of 'snow' over the piste

Well jonathon, i don't know where you were but on Christmas day ? we were eating our dinner in the Irish just as it started to snow. By the end of the evening it was up to the fence outside. It was around 20cm in the town with a reported 70cm on the top of the mountain. Now im not going to split hairs on depths but it was the first appreciable snowfall, we had earlier falls of 2-5cm but these made little differance. The first snow last season was actually on Oct 4th, a little over 20cm fell on Vihren with very low temps through Nov, this season we saw snow of a little over 30cm in early Nov, which was enough to close Predal for an hour, unfortunately we have seen clear skies and high daytime temps ever since...

re: Bansko Snow...?

I was out the 6th of Feb last year and there was plenty of snow up the mountian tended to get a little slushy right by the gondola station but the cannons kept this going! i think feb is normally a good time in bulgaria if you look at past records of snow depth for feb!! should be fine.
