Can someone please tell me if the skiing in Bansko is only accessible via the gondola, or are there small runs in the village with drag lifts, walkable from the hotels? The brochures don't make it clear. I was wondering if the gondola happened to shut, say due to high winds, then does that mean there is absolutely no skiing available?
Wrong. You can drive up to the top of the gondola and then access the ski are as if you had just gone on the gondola. However, if its windy it i usually the top of the mountain that is closed and not the gondola. I've only know the gondola to close due to high winds once (last year) and then the whole mountain was shut.
There is no skiing in the town itself, just the end of the ski road.
I stand corrected Mat.
I forgot about the option to drive up the the ski area. I should have known because I drove up there myself this year after the ski season had finished (May).
As Mat says though, if the gondola is closed they the ski lifts up the rest of the mountain will probably be closed to.

I guess at the very least it was an attempt at skiing (if ...

Yes, the taxi takes you to Shiligarnika and you can go down the ski road to the top of the gondola and they might have a couple of the more sheltered lifts running. In the days before the gondola we all had to go this way, using clapped out minibuses. Dark days....
