My fella and I are skiing for first time on January 20th in Borovets. Just wondering what i need to buy to go under my ski stuff. Ended up getting a fairly warm ski coat and pants which have a fleece lining. Do i need to buy thermals and a base layer? Or just thermals? How many layers do you think I'll need on top? Do thermals get smelly?!
it will probably surprise you how warm you get when skiing assuming your gear is of average standard. I must admit i usually get by on a tee-shirt under the jacket, and only thermals when it is really cold. the bigger factor is the speed of the wind as this is what will cool you quicker. As long as you stay dryyou will unlikely get too cold.
also a good hat--as you lose a lot of heat through the head.

the other thing apart from gloves, socks etc. is a good set of either goggles or glasses. Generally if it snowing goggles are better--dont go for too cheap, and not too small or you will be stuffed by steaming up all the time.
Sun glasses when not snowing (or goggles if you prefer)
another tip-dont forget sun block and lip balm, making sure you put around the underside of the nose as reflected sun can burn.
I allways wear a thinsulate polarneck under my jacket and that does me fine...apart from one day last yr when it was 25 below bloody hell it was cold so i'd stay indoors if it's that cold
i wear just a tshirt under my ski stuff and find this is fine even last year in bansko when it was realy cold only thing I did was do zipped up the air vent on the trousers as it was a bit cold with them open. the time you feel the cold the most is on the lifts as the wind gets you when your up that high.
When we were in Pamps, it was -20 or lower most days. Needed good thermal base layer, thin fleece, then top layer. Hat a must. Buy good gloves and socks (some wool content). Gets particularly cold on lifts - keep hands under pits on way up - it does make a difference!
