I've just learned that our country does not stock the Lev and we're leaving for Bulgaria on Friday. I know that I've read many threads on this matter about what to be careful of when exchanging currency but can't make out whether it is better to get Euro or Sterling or Dollars and where the best exchange place is in Borovets. Should we exchange at the airport or in Boro? Does anyone have any advice?
Keep your sterling and exchange in Borovets, you get a better rate and also many places will accept english pounds, but be sure that your notes are in good condition.
Good advice, exchanging sterling here will give you as much as 10% more lev for you money, and great rate at the moment, as high as 2.42 lv-£ at the moment in some banks...

You can get lev in the UK from the post office and UK banks. I always like to travel with a small amount in local currency for the journey from the airport. I do find that you will have to order it though so allow a couple of days. They don't tend to keep lev in stock.
I went to Bulgaria last year but for a Summer holiday, and the amount of times I saw people getting scammed with currency exchange was unbelieveable. I will be changing my money into Lev before heading to the ski resort.
If you are changing it in Bulgaria, make sure you do it in a bank, not a dodgy street side exchange.
