Personally if the conditions are good and you are on the right skiis you can't loose. Having your own skiis - you know what you have. (if that makes sense) You could get them tuned at the beginning of the season ready for your next trip or when you return / at the end of your trip. If you can get a good deal at the end of the season or on ebay it may well make sense. On the other hand hiring skiis lets you try different types and that may well be worth it until you figure out whether you are committed or exactly what kind of ski you want. If the conditions are bad - definitely hire skiis. I believe it is a personal preference. I have had my own for many years and it was worth it. This was the first year I had to hire (long story). It cost me 50 leva per day to hire equipment for my level of skiing and that is more than £20. It adds up very quickly.

Personally, I would buy my own boots way before I would buy my own skis. Boots make or break your week, skis don't!
