Boro V's Bansko

Ok guyts, i need some advice here. Went to Boro last year and had a great time, the only problems were the slightly seedy feel of the town and the fact that there wasn't a huge variety of slopes when the gondola was closed. Skiing was pretty good when everything was open, hotel was superb, as was the price! This year there is talk of doing to trip again, but i was thinking of a change and heading to Bansko. So what i'm asking is.... what are the merits of each resort compared to the other ...

Skiing was pretty good when everything was open, hotel was superb, as was the price! This year there is talk of doing to trip again, but i was thinking of a change and heading to Bansko. So what i'm asking is.... what are the merits of each resort compared to the other one? There will be a group of about 10 of us, mostly guys, mid twenties, like a beer, but that's not really themain focus, the skiing is. Thanks in advance for the help.

In Bansko the skiing is far superior to Borovets, in my opinion no comparison. The only negative this forthcoming winter will be the lack of a second gondola. I fear the inital queue to get up the mountain will be very long.

With regards to the beer, don't worry Bansko has many watering wholes, aimed at both tourists and locals so you won't be disappointed.

A good hotel in a reasonable budget it the Hotel Strazhite.

re: Boro V's Bansko

I'd just like to mention one advantage of Borovets over Bansko and that is;
If high winds hamper both resorts and the gondola in both resorts are closed, the whole mountain in Bansko is closed. In Borovets there is still skiing available on the lower slopes. Very Happy
It's even possible to ski Yastrebets 4 man chair.
But at the end of the day, to vary your holiday by skiing a different resort, can be just another adventure to enjoy.

Further to Fiona, last season the Gondola in Bansko was only closed 2 days throughout the season due to high winds, whereas the Gondola in Borovets was closed weekly.

As an alternative in Bansko, you can take a taxi or mini bus to the base of the mountain, where you will find all the lifts operating even if the gondola is closed.

re: Boro V's Bansko

Not neccessarily true Uncle Bulgaria..

I garee that it is very rare for the Gondola to be closed but on windy days other lifts close when the Gondola is open. Especially the ones to Todorka peak.I experience this on about 3 occasions during my 3 separate weeks there.

I agree that a second gondola would be needed this season but sadly that is not to be.

In even of lift closures they still try to keep things running as smoothly as possible and do a great job of it.

re: Boro V's Bansko

The gondola was closed for maintanence every Monday morning and was up and runing by 11.OOam.During the peak of the season, they kept the gondola runing everyday. We skiied the whole season and recall the gondola shut due to high wind for about 5 days over the course of the season.
Overall, I think this was pretty good.
Only 1 hour from Sofia and your accommodation is at the slopes!!!.Perfect. Wink

re: Boro V's Bansko

There has been some discussion over Bansko building an airport near by for transfers, this is going to be very necassary, because in a few years time, the Borovets development will have peope asking why go to Bansko. There will be more rooms, more runs, more lifts, and only about 40mins from the airport, why would you want to go on a 3-31/2 hour transfer to a smaller resort, overpopulated with unrented apartments! I skied in Bansko for the entire season, and on the two occasssions the Gondola was closed, the lifts on the main mountain remained open, and I was able to ski, by driving to the base of the mountain.

Yes it's true that on occssasions, the extremley exposed bubble lift to Todorka Peak was closed, however, the drags at the top were still open and could be accessed by the other chair lifts.

The closure of the Gondola in Borovets can be a real problem, in season 2004/2005, it was closed for a total of 36 days (some of these days it operated to the mid station), thats over one month of a very short season.

As for the Super Borovets project, don't hold your breath! According to contacts in the municipality the entire project is in serious doubt, and investment is not in place, despite what nonsense it being boasted by greedy real estate agents.

The infamous murder of the chief investor, and the lack of interest in the project by the inheritance of his fortune, the wife, certainly did not help the cause.

That will be why the starting ceromony is on the 1st August, with the Mayor of Samokov turning the first 'sod' then Wink Wink Wink you must have missed out on the realignment of the company board and the overrides given to the Mayor (which was the real reason for the delay), and the fact that the money has now been in place for the new gondola for some time Razz

A mayor with a shovel is one thing! A new Gondola is another. I'm with uncle BG on this one. There are going to be a few disappointed investors in the Samokov region.
