Louise - as we usually book with Balkan, we fly Bulgaria Air. They are ok - the planes are usually second hand Boeing 737's from Germany - a big improvement from the old Soviet Tupolov 154's
The air stewardesses are often very straight faced and the in flight meal is a non descript ham or cheese roll, so I suggest you buy something at the airport. The pilots are usually ex air force and know their job, especially when Sofia is snow or fog bound.

HiHave flown Bulgaria Air on numerous occasions. The planes are mostly 737's as the previous post states. The cabin crew speak little English and are not a great help. The food that I got was a chocolate filled croissant-not very nice!!!
I've flown all over the world with various carriers and I have to say some of the smoothest landings were into Plovdiv with a Balkey pilot up front!
No worries and enjoy the snow!

Flew with them in the summer .. as it is a 3 hour flight not sure what the food expectations everyon has are??!!but a sandwich is what u get... flown BA to South Africa and gotten worse for breakfast - so think of it that way..
planes looked fine to me

Borogirl!Foods gonna be hot and decent (apparantly!) next year with Balkan! Much in line with other tour opperators!

Ian - think you may have to pay for food next year Most short haul seem to be abandoning free meals in favour of cut price fares.They used to do a 3 course (small) meal with a hot main course but as it was Bulgarian, people still complained. They never use UK airport catering so bring enough from BG for return journey.
Have you booked yet or waiting for final decision on in-flight meal

£14 quid for return in flight meal (hot food though!)- at the momment Balkan are looking around Borovets for where can i get a free child place at what date from Newcastle! ( i e mail them direct!) was intending Iglika 9th Jan but the advertised free child place was not coming up in the final costing so e mailed them asking wht not!
They said only certain departures from certain airports had the offer so i said whats available from Newcastle that offers the free child place (saving about ...
