Hi Stuart, Have you driven in serious winter conditions before? as steve says it can be an interesting journey, snow tyres a must and also chains easily accesible. Good tip about the deisel, on our trip to La Thuile this year we had problems with fuel waxing, turns out that the pump fuel is only good down to a certain temperature and any colder and you need to add anti waxing additive to the fuel. Good tip about the deisel, on our trip to La Thuile this year we had problems with fuel waxing, turns out that the pump fuel is only good down to a certain temperature and any colder and you need to add anti waxing additive to the fuel. Have to say though that the route steve reccommends is normally kept clear, but it can take a while after a heavy fall, the biggest problem is normally mad bulgarians driving too fast for the conditions or lorries blocking the way.
We have used this route 6 times and never had a problem.
Good Luck.

re: Car Hire Bansko

I have used the same route for last 6/7 years and apart from either last year or year before it has been fine. The roads are getting better each year. Much better in daylight, with a stop at the golden arches en route, lovely Bulgarian burger ! Once on the ring road you drive past a wierd light shop down to a crossroads with traffic lights. I normally turn left up the cobbled road and out os Sofia but I think you can now keep straight and connect more quickly to the motorway. Very easy drive ...

I normally turn left up the cobbled road and out os Sofia but I think you can now keep straight and connect more quickly to the motorway. Very easy drive provided no snow ! One thing I would say about Bulgarian rental cars is they don't often give you the vehicle you asked for. Our 7 seater espace (or similar) was a Dacia van ! Good luck Stuart ! Oh and be careful of the police speed traps !

re: Car Hire Bansko

Thank you very much for the additional input guys. I had hired a car but have now cancelled this due to the advice given. Like McMoodle pointed out in his original reply, it's just not worth the stress, especially as I'm supposed to be on holiday! Booze

It would not be so bad had I known the route properly, or it not being my first time driving on the right hand side of the road, then the winter conditions on top of that. I think I've made a wise decision.

Thank you all again Smile

If you still want to ski a day at Borovets contact Steve C on here as he organises day trips across.

Agree with dbut, give steve c or nightmuffy a shout, their trip to Borovets is great, went with Steve season before last, its a great day out and the plus is Steve normally takes you round the pistes, oh and a bar or two.
