Cash / Travellers Cheques

Lots of people seem to worry about what form of money to take to Bulgaria. There is a very easy answer...

Take with some Lev having changed a few pounds worth over here, just to get you through the first 24 hours and take your bank debit card.

You can withdraw money at the ATM machines using your normal pin number and get the central bank exchange rate - usually half way between what is advertised for buying and selling rates for cash. It's a much better rate of exchange and most banks make no charge for using a debit card overseas.

I used my debit card in Borovets last year and could take out as much or as little as I wanted (provided I had it). I could take out money every day without worrying how much commission I was going to be charged, were my bank notes creased, torn or written on.

I very rarely take cash abroad, I rely on the hole in the wall machines as it's also a much safer way to carry money - just don't loose the debit card!

Hi there

I cannot agree with this having returned from Pamporovo only yesterday - and where although there were a few cash machines in the resort centre neither worked all week except for one evening.

We took cash in sterling and changed £20 at a time with no problems at any of the hotel receptions in the resort. If we had relied on ATM's then we would have had no money at all. We tried to use a credit card in one of the ski wear shops to be informed that we would have to come ...

We tried to use a credit card in one of the ski wear shops to be informed that we would have to come back in half an hour, when hopefully authorisation of card would have occurred- 2 hrs later no joy

Perhaps Borovets is different - but certainly in Pamperovo cash rules!

If your UK bank has an exchange, you should be able to get it there!
