Cold toes

Hi - any advice about ski socks? Last year my toes were freezing, despite having thick socks on. I've got some new ones this year - made with merino wool - and I'm hoping these will be better. Any thoughts ...?

I put football socks under my ski socks.

Toasty!

Only problem is, that would make my boots very tight Richard

re: Cold toes

Wearing two pairs of socks can increase the chance of blisters. Sometimes socks that are too thick can make your toes colder. This is because your feet maybe getting too warm, sweating and then the sweat begins to freeze in the cold temperatures. One piece of advice is to try thinner socks (odd i know) or you could put the boot warmer sachets near your toes. Also use socks that take the moisture away from the foot. Most ski shops/outdoor shops should be able to advise.

invest in some really good ones, and I agree that thinner are better if they are of good quality. you may also want to make sure that your boots aren't cutting off the circulation to your toes!!

If you're suffering with cold toes definately take Katy's advice and invest in a decent set of socks. You can't go wrong. I work in extreme weathers and it makes life a lot better if you have happy feet!!!!

re: Cold toes

Correct laura, thin layers are better than thick layers as the heat caught between the layers acts as insulation.

Like base layers the layer next to the skin should be breathable. Eg, a stocking type sock for the ladies Wink.

Avoid cotton or will as they will absorb more moisture, and the moisture then cools hence the cold feet

re: Cold toes

yes, too right Laura, happy feet and hands too. This year i'll be in Bansko with a friend who lives in the canaries and has never been skiing. my advice to her was if she is going to over spend on anything, socks and gloves are the things to over spend on! a great investment!

re: Cold toes

Try putting Vaseline on your toes - used to do it before playing football - very effective like channel swimmers covering themselves in grease!

re: Cold toes

Definately. I work in the great outdoors 60% of the year in all climates and environments. Having the right clothing makes the job so much more enjoyable.

People often get the right clothing for their bodies but neglect the hands and feet. I'm not a fan of these hand/foot warmer packets. can often cause more problems if the hands and feet are too cold but other people swear by them.
