Are the roads cleaned regularly or can we expect snow on them? Is it safe to go by car?
Also, do we need to bring the log burner with us or will the hotels have heating on Jan. 17th?
The roads are kept pretty clear, not well gritted like the UK but most vehicles can make it in to Borovets without 4 wheel drive or snow chains on the tyres just a good set of winter tryes will do. Snow ploughs are running up and down when we have fresh snow.
I drove yesterday, the road from Sofia to Borovets is fine and cleaned regularly. If you're worried don't go very early in the morning to allow them a chance to have a first sweep. Its a winding road and if you get stuck behind a lorry can be very frustrating but take it easy as there are few passing places. Bulgarians drive this road like maniacs, although there seem to be much fewer accidents than before.
....compulsory in BG during the winter.Up to Borovets you will never need chains or assistance.that road is fine pretty much all the time.
Different story is you are traveling to Pamporovo and Bansko(pack for definite chains, basket of sand and a showel plus the regulars like triangle, special vest and dont forget to check your lights before traveling
Well if I do need to get to Boro, I do have winter tyres to put on, and I always have chains and the rest of it. But the 17th is right around the corner and the gas crisis is getting me worried.
Thanks for your help, everyone.
Do you know where you can get the operation to allow you to see through big trucks and hills and around corners. Most bulgarian drivers seem to have had this done.
