Dry skiing

We took the scouts and guides dry skiing last night - I had great fun chucking myself down the main slopes whilst the kids had a lesson.

I only went up to the second exit of the slope cos it was very foggy and I was still a bit cautious - didn't want to hurt myself as I had a car full of kids to take home. Somehow, the guide leader, standing at the top of the main slope, lost her balance, got her pole stuck in the matting and fell over and broke her arm just below her elbow... she's ...

Ouch

re: Dry skiing

Hi Judith,

Which dry slope do you go to? I learnt to ski on the one at Chatham, Kent.

Hemel Hempstead - and I must say, they were absolutely fantastic with us last night. We were booked in for two instructors and open practice for those who could ski.

They had two guys who were boarding and who were nothing to do with us, but they were brill. They stayed with Penny the whole time, they'd got the ambulance there before we'd even realised something was really serious and the two guys on the boards brought Penny down in the stretcher so gently and perfectly.

The instructors agreed to keep the kids on the lessons until we had everything clear and so that kept them occupied and the two kids doing open practice were allowed to go on the trainer slope just to keep them out of mischief and stop everyone crowding around.

re: Dry skiing

my hubby teaches snowboarding at a dry slope which has just been resurfaced with some different "matting" to the norm and says it makes for a much nicer "landing" if anyone is unfortunate enough to fall. I know what you mean though having been one of those that have "tasted" the mat whilst learning the basics.

Judith - sorry to hear about your colleague - hope she doesnt suffer too much - having broken my ankle in 3 places two years ago in Verbier and having to be lifted off the mountain ...

re: Dry skiing

She's just rung me - they are just putting it in tubigrip with instructions to keep it mobile or it will stiffen up.. Strong painkillers are now the order of the day. Maybe some Bulgarian alcohol would be good .

She's only just gone back to work after a month off sick and is now likely to be off work for 6 - 8 weeks...
