Quick question, we have taken out travel insurance and that's all come through fine, just wondered I have looked everywhere today and I can't find our EHIC cards? As we have full insurance does it matter if we don't take them? Or do I need to panic and try and get replacements?
you dont really need them.and even if u did they can be easily tracked when abroad using your national insurance number.
you can request replacement cards for future travel
It's very easy to get a new EHIC card. You can either get a form at the post office or apply online. If you do require medical assistance and try and claim on your travel insurance they may refuse all or part of your claim if you didn't have an EHIC card. It's best to have one with you, just in case.It may well not make any difference to your treatment, but it could be a costly mistake not to have one.
Yeah....EHIC allows you free access to the public health system in European countries. It has nothing to do with private health care.
It isnt mentioned on any documentation regarding private travel insurance, therefore I cannot see it interfering with cover. Therefore it wont be a costly mistake not having one.
But I cant see the harm in having one, as they are free.
It could have you treated quicker, as time will be lost trying to find out which private hospital you are entitled to ...

It could have you treated quicker, as time will be lost trying to find out which private hospital you are entitled to attend. The private hospital could be 400 miles away, and the public hospital 400 yards down the road.
I suppose you will never know how sufficient the cover you have is, untill you really need to use it.
I'm guessing that if you are involved in a bad accident, life or death situation, that emergency services will treat you and rush you to the nearest hospital. Surely this the natural reaction, and they will try to recoup the costs later.
Is it possible that you could be lying there with your head hanging off, and they go searching your belongings for an EHIC card, or travel insurance documentation?
Now saying that I witnessed a moped crash in Portugal a couple of years back, and the ambulance personal wouldnt treat the injured party untill he produced some documentation, and the guy was seriously injured.
And as mentioned on here before.....If the emergency services personal cant read or speak english....it wont matter what documents you have....you will be going where they take you!!!
Take your EHIC. A couple of weeks ago I had an accident while skiing in Italy. I was initially given emergency treatment at a private med centre in resort, then transferred to a state hospital, where I stayed for 6 days.
We had to pay for the private med centre, but the state hospital took the EHIC details, so there was no charge. If we hadn't had my EHIC, we'd have had to pay for my stay and treatment at the state hospital. Our insurance company are reimbursing our expenses, but ...

We had to pay for the private med centre, but the state hospital took the EHIC details, so there was no charge. If we hadn't had my EHIC, we'd have had to pay for my stay and treatment at the state hospital. Our insurance company are reimbursing our expenses, but would not have paid out for the cost of stay and treatment in the state hospital as this could have been paid for under the EHIC scheme.
