Good 2009 deals for families?

Since we got back after Feb half term I've been scouring the internet trying to get a decent price for half term 2009. Our problem seems to be that my eldest will be 12, so is classed as an adult and there are no free child places about for the youngest. So far the cheapest option has been to go to Canada, which seems incredible!! Any suggestions would be very welcome.
Thanks

Hi Pam

The other option is to sort it yourself. I will be going with my 3 teenage children, so that's effectively 4 adults.

I've rented an apartment in the Royal Plaza for £400 for the half term week. I've booked the flights too. I could have waited for easyjet to put their prices out whenever they do, June, July? but as that is really peak season they will be around £80 a head. Wizzair might be cheaper but they have their problems. BA are already over £300 (though who'd want to ...

I could have waited for easyjet to put their prices out whenever they do, June, July? but as that is really peak season they will be around £80 a head. Wizzair might be cheaper but they have their problems. BA are already over £300 (though who'd want to risk T5, LOL!), and bearing in mind that flights increase in price as the seats are sold, I booked flights through Opodo.com for £160 a head inclusive. Those same flights are now £185 but there is availability.

Airport transfers are £60 each way for a van to take 4 of us.

So far the total per head is under £300.

Breakfast is cheap and easy to provide, lunch has to be paid for anyway, and as far as the evening meal goes, it is possible to find reasonably priced restaurants in Borovets or I'll just cook something easy. Re lift pass and ski pack, I hope Fraser will sort that for me, but you have to add that on to the brochure prices anyway.

I believe that while Canada often comes up cheaper, the meals are not included in the price and the lift passes and ski pack are quite expensive. Though you are probably getting better equipment and better skiing!

Maybe see you in Boro next Feb then, but have fun researching and planning!

Agree with that, book accommodation, transfers and lift passes through this site, flights yourself and any lessons or equipment yourself.
Did the whole thing Feb 08 half term for a family of 4 for about £1800 inclusive of private lessons and ski hire from Interski.
Same holiday through the travel companies would have cost about £2600!

Now I am confident booking on line and have some trusty contacts, I would only book it all myself now, as it is cheaper, unless it is a last minute bargain price. Not sure I would do it for a first visit without the safety net a tour operator provides.

re: Good 2009 deals for families?

I just read that that an adult 6 day ski pass for borovets next year will cost 229 euro. somebody can correct me if im wrong but if that is the case i would suggest taking the cheaper deal in canada. 229 euro is not cheap, prob same price or more expensive as canada but then u will have better lift and pistes. food and drink would not be as cheap though

re: Good 2009 deals for families?

I must correct myself, lift passes will not be 229 euro, i assume they will be as they were this year, poor anti bulgarian web source. my apologies

Thanks for all the replies, looks like it will have to be DIY. Never done it before though at all, so will have to take courage in both hands and go for it!

Thanks again

Hi Pam...

Don't know where you were thinking of going, but if it's Borovets, then this apartment has the same owners as the one I rented...

Good luck!

... and there are lots to be found if you search on google. Incidentally, you can find really nice places for under £300 for the week in Samokov, about 10km from Borovets. Some will offer a free daily transfer into the town. I would have liked to have done this, but my teenagers all wanted to be smack bang in the centre of things, so Royal Plaza it had to be. I just hope we are not kept awake all night...

re: Good 2009 deals for families?

Samokov is worth looking at. There's a regular bus to Borovets or a taxi was 15 lev this season. Food, drink and restaurants are so much cheaper and great food. There's even a ski run and jump in the town with a new chair lift. Great for children.

There's plenty of options when you know where to look and as tour companies bump their prices up for school holidays, you could save quite a bit.
