I am off to the Hotel Rila in January - can anyone clarify how good or bad this hotel is - there appears to be both good comments and awful comments on it!!!!re: HOTEL RILA
The hotel is clean warm and friendly and has fine facilities. Ideally situated too.I personally was not that unhappy with food - pleanty of others eat in the hotel rather than out. It may not be what you are used to and like much mass catering may not always be quite as hot as one would wish.
Peoples expectations and perceptions vary - hence the varied views of Rila / Borovets/ Bulgaria or indeed anywhere.

Stayed at the Rila last Christmas. Hotel in a good position hence we are returning in Feburary half term week. But eating out is a must the food is so much more injoyable and the people are very freindly. All within walking distance of the hotel.Enjoy! l know we will!

hioff to the Rila on the 17th Jan, for the 3rd year, we find it great and have no problems with food. Ideal for the slopes especially with children

Good hotel, staying many years in the Rila hotel. also tried Moura and Samokov hotel. But think rila is the better one.The food: the first 3 days the breakfast and dinner will give you enough varietie! after these days its al the same like the first 3. For me that,s not a problem. because we always go a couple off times to a restaurant. (cheap)

The Hotel is very nicely positioned. The pool and everything is great. The bar is a bit smokey (cigs are cheap and people tend to chain smoke) not good if you don't like smoking. The food is luke warm but not for me. More like school dinners. Eating out is so cheap it really isn't a problem. Breakfast is fine in hotel. You will have a great time if its your first time skiing. There are 'ladies of the night' but you will probably need them to be pointed out to you. They sit there all night around a table sharing a couple of drinks between them. In the numerous hours I've spent in that bar I reckon I've seen one girl disapear with a gentleman and that was at about 1am. They are not exactly busy!!
The food is ok. Breakfast you can get coffee, cereal, fruit and a cooked breakfast 'local style'. I have never eaten there in the evening before, I hear its not all that.... I go with a very good bunch of lads we we go hard on the booze every night. I have never managed to spend more than £200 on food and drink in a week and that's eating out every night. There are some really good little places to eat serving pizza'a, steaks and local cuisine. This would be my advice, eat out every night.
Finally, I have mentioned this on the site before but its worth mentioning again.... take some ear plugs!! The Rila is so central that it can get quite noisy at night, especially if you have a balcony at the front. Just take some with you please you will regret it otherwise!!!
Oh yeah, the swimming pool in the hotel is really nice as is the sauna and steam room..... take your trunks!!
