Helmets

Advice please - Will a skateboard/cycle helmet offer any protection or should it be a proper ski helmet. Bit concerned after that 11 yr old died in Canada last week.
Mine have never used them before but are getting a bit daredevil on the red slopes.

re: Helmets

thanks - that was my thought. I wish they were compulsory like in Italy that way I don't have to argue with kids about looking cool and complaining no one else is wearing them!

re: Helmets

I got back from Austria skiing last night after a week there. We saw helmets in the airport on our way out, and having looked over the internet a few weeks before and finding some horror stories about head injuries on the slopes my wife and I decided to buy them. We paid £30 for each helmet. Thinking we would look fools and feel right t*ts in them we were quite reluctant to wear them. But when we got onto the slopes the first day there were loads of seasoned skiers wearing them. Maybe 2/5ths ...

But when we got onto the slopes the first day there were loads of seasoned skiers wearing them. Maybe 2/5ths had them on and they are becoming more popular too. My advise is dont just let the kids wear them, get one yourself too....and having seen someone airlifted off the mountain two days ago I am glad I had mine on!.
enjoy your holiday

re: Helmets

A lot of ski/snowboard helmets are the same as skate helmets which have been modified by the manufacturer to include earmuffs, goggle straps etc for colder climates. An example is the giro encore which is a converted flak but most are ski/snowboard specific. Make sure you do buy a snow specific helmet and definitely not a cycle helmet.

re: Helmets

The most important thing is get a helmet you and the kids actually like and want to wear, I love mine, better than any itchy wooly hat and it's got ipod earphones built in/removable, goggles work better with it and it seems to look ok, make it part of the gear you don't evan think about wearing, comfy light cosy, sorted. Very Happy

re: Helmets

A young boy died in America last week, he was wearing a helmet, but not a snowboarding helmet, so get the right ones to be on the safe side.
