Help Needed - Best way to record someone skiing....

Took a camcorder for the last 2 years with the aim of getting some good 'action shots'.....unfortunately, when I have got home and played it back it doesn't some across as too impressive - no sense of speed, hitty-miss zoom shots etc.. I currently have a miniDV camcorder with 25x optical, 500x digital ...thinking of trading up to a DVD camcorder but concerned that I will still end up with crappy ski vids - any tips greatly received.

Thanks

Hi,
had similar problems with lack of sensation of speed and height, we are lucky than one of our friends is an instructor in Borovets and takes the camera for the whole week, the only time we got a real sensation of speed was whilst he was filming moving along side us, and for the height perspective the angle has to be exagerated, ie camera a lot lower than the jump, used a dvd cmera last year and was so much easier for the transfer onto 1 dvd and the addtion and deletion of scenes stills ...

hope this helps

Most resorts have professional ski-cameramen you can hire for the day. The next day they will have produced a DVD of your entire day's skiing.

Good value and most of those I know who have done this have been very pleased with the results.

Hi Oldieski, I find this one of the best vids on the web.
Prob filmed with the cam IN the vest or something..
see here
see also part II.
Maybe contact that person and ask him??
(Pete, Banky??)

Aaaagh Borovets Razz
I have never seen myself skiing so that type of filming would be nice.

Oldieski,
To give the impression of speed, use a wide angle lens, and get close to the action. Once you've mastered keeping your subject in the frame, extend the focal length and it will appear even faster.
Truth be known though, video simply does not convey how fast or steep a situation is.

Christo skis from the peak back to the bottom gondola in less than 5 minutes. That's a quick run!
Notice how the camera gives the impression of being very close to the other skiers. In reality, it isn't. We had a bit of a discussion last year about how reckless he was frightening other skiers, in fact he was plenty far enough from them.
Place the camera on a small tripod, and have your subject ski over it. This will only give you a second or so of footage, but edits up really well. Another trick, is to place the camera closer to the snow, better yet, mount it on the ski itself. Audio plays its part as well. Getting a good audio track of the ski tearing into the piste (especially if icy) can convey how hard they are going. Using the zoom, is generally something to be avoided, unless it is used to make the shot.
This clip:
Ski Record attempt
Displays some of the points I've listed. This guy is really moving, but it doesn't look like it. Have a listen to the audio, and see the effect of the zoom out at about 22 seconds.....get the picture now? Very Happy
Finally, IMHO stick with the MiniDV camera. It is much more flexible, and likely to perform better than any DVD camera. DVD cameras are designed for those that simply want to create a DVD to watch at home, not edit the footage.
Hope this helps?

Banknote - I think your one with Pete Todorov skiing in Pamporovo is good as it does in fact give a sense of speed - thats my opinion anyway.
