Don't worry - it's a good laugh really. The very first time we went with Balkan was in 1991. Some of the seats weren't fastened to the floor! The stewardesses were kept busy going through to the cockpit with trays of vodka! The 'in flight meal' was a very heavy grey bread roll, a thick slice of unrecognisable meat and one SERIOUSLY large tomato.
It has definitely improved since then!

As far as planes are concerned - their saftey record is excellent.

No need to worry - it's just that they are a bit dated.

We have flown with Balkan 3 times in the last couple of years with no delays + no problems (apart from the food!) - hope I havent jinxed this year's trip! Got flights at good times this year for £91 return so judging by experience to date cant fault them.
1st year was in a v old Tupolev - we had to hold our tables up for take off which was a bit scary!
Last year though all 4 flights were in what looked like relatively new 737's

well, it looks like you get a bit messed around by all the tour operators then. But Hey, we've got a lovely apartment, we gonna have the best snow in decades (please god!!!), and we gonna get drunk everynight on kamenitza and flirt vodka and we're gonna drink cheeky hot chocolates on the piste, have an ace time on the skidoos again and maybe this yr get a husky ride...so...well...I can't wait!!! Very Happy Wink

We are going to Borovets from Glasgow with some mates who are going from London. They are flying from London, and us from Manchester, both with Thomas Cook. We decided it would be better to do the drive down from Glasgow to Manchester and stick the car in a long stay carpark.
Haven't seen any stories about Thomas Cook so hopefully we will be ok!

Whilst they might be having the same problems with the consolodation of flights, be advised that Balkan Tours and Balkan Holidays are not associated in anyway and are completely different tour operators.

Look on the bright side, the snow conditions are much better than last year!
