Mat, you poor bugger...
Sounds like home, sleepy westcountry town, had car vandalised twice (totalling £1800), had video camera, editing desk, tapes (irreplacable) stolen from lounge while i was in kitchen, £600 worth of designer clothes stolen off washing line in the day, victorian washstand (100kg at least) stolen from private driveway to house, girlfriend at the time daughter mugged on our doorstep, and various petty things including our dog being shot by airgun, wall at end of ...

All of which when reported to the police was shrugged off as not worth investigating... I'll take my chances here mate
Never experiance any crime or "trouble" but what I did find very very odd was the club next to the communist statue up from the square. We wee going round the pubs totally off season and we fancied popping in. now it was very quiet in there but music as loud and oddly every seat at the bar was "reserved" (with a sign) likewise every table was reserved with a sign!! We had to stand in an area which was very small beside the dance floor (nowhere else to stand) we had 1 beers in there roughly 40 mins and about 11pm... never seen anything like it o we left (even though there was an entry fee) we found a nice mehana closeby with ample seating and no issue to get a seat.
Anyone care to have a guess/explain the reason for this oddity or is i the norm for that place?
Oh Im a big fan of the apres ski next to the gondela & friendly bar probably prefer the apres ski as its bigger and Im happy to pay the premium (frankly everywhere isnt costly - UK S.E. prices are over £4 a beer anyway so Ive yet to see a 9Lev beer.
Some places put reserved signs everywhere and then offer you a table when you enter - they're used to Bulgarians saying 'I'll have that table' not English people thinking 'we can't sit there it has a reserved sign'. The waitress must have thought you were very odd.....
Staff in the Friendly Bar are anything but and their 'self tipping' drives me mad.
Cheers Mat helps explain it however the dancefloor area had say 15-20 people on it and in the whole place only a couple of spaces at the bar were occupied... It was difficult to order a beer too as you couldnt order at the bar we were told the bar man would come over to take the order which we though very unusual as we just stood for 5 mins waiting for them to bring the drinks over.
You don't order at the bar and you also don't pay until the end when they bring you the check. Easy habit to get into which has caused me no end of trouble when I go back to the UK....
I travel all over the world Filming for advertising agencies and Tv, I used to do WISH YOU WERE HERE, last year I had to travel balchick, Varna, the (blacksea gold coast or sunny coast, I think it was called) Sofia and Pamporovo. After I had finished filming most of the time and at night I was on my own so went off walking around I did not see any trouble at all. All the Bulgarians were so helpful and in Varna I was eating in a restaurant when the waitress asked if I was ok on my own, I ...

All the Bulgarians were so helpful and in Varna I was eating in a restaurant when the waitress asked if I was ok on my own, I said yes and asked where all the night life was and how much a taxi would be, she said that both her & her boyfriend finished in 10 mins and would take me to the best place a good 3o minute drive away, how amazing was that, you would not get that in London.
Brilliant people and she got her friend to pick me up at 3.00am to take me home what a wonderful country...
I used the lev rather than the euro as it gave me a better return slightly.
O my god Mikey, better lock my doors and put up the shutters, ah well, it'll be just like home.... perhaps i'd better nip down the market and buy a `desert eagle 9mm' and a few land mines to place around the patio
SOT ?? `Silly Old Teapot' ?? `Santitory OperaTive' ?? `Sod Off Tourists' ?? `Sad Old Tosser' ??..... i could go on hehehehehe
Actually I leave my house in the UK unlocked a lot of the time... I don't want to overstate the matter but this is a country with a lot of poor people, a very weak social security net and a weaker police force and a small proportion of the population who make a nice living nicking stuff. Maybe its being woken up at 5 am by a gypsy in the bedroom going through my wallet (and not one I've invited...) that makes me a bit paranoid
Blimey Mat, you are very lucky... I personally would lock my door if i was outside washing the car
There is obviously an element here as there is in all countries, and perhaps the capital attracts a larger share. The UK is also full of poor people who cannot afford to buy their drugs and must struggle by on the proceeds of their stolen goods. Even when caught numerous times are placed back on the streets to steal again
