Why duz no-one believe pamporovover? It seems u cant post anything on here without upsetting the regulars, unless ur saying how 'absolutely fabulous' Bulgaria is. None of you can accept any criticism towards Bulgaria. If he/she had a crap time and wants to let others know how the place has changed, then let him/her say what they want without having to have a go. It's not compulsory to only say positive things on here, its good to know the bad points too.
Sorry if I upset people, I have been going to Bansko for the last 5 years, have had some great times, I am just telling how I see it now. Some huge advice - hire your skis from the bottom of the base gondola and take out the extra insurance. If your hire skis are stolen and you havent done this, you will be told that if the skis are returned to them after you have left they will refund the money to your visa card. All three of my mates are still waiting for money from 2003!!!
I googled and got this site by chance. Actually, I just got back from Bansko too, early on Sunday (23rd) morning....
It was true that only one red route was opened...but this was due to the weather conditions. We had fun, as beginners tripping up on mud and rocks on the flat part of the slope...but saying that I really loved the resort at Bansko and on my one and only chair ride to one of the slopes loved the scenery on Friday, with the blue sky. Hiya,
I googled and got this site by chance.
The snow up there was much better than on the nursery slope that scared me half to death as well as the conveyor belt :-) but I think it should be fine now...we were the first to use it.
Bansko is in a transitional phase at the moment...there are building works everywhere...lately there has been a lot of investment...I guess by lots of British people that will probably turn it into what they want it to be, all too soon. but there are 3 museums and an art gallery there. We had a nice chat with a nice guy who was promoting his traditional Mehana but was happy enough to give us a brief history of the place.
I think the actual ski resort itself will be great, when the snow comes and I'd like to return to try out the blue routes, which will hopefully be covered with snow.
We stayed in a great hotel but quite far out. The food was fine...but I prefered the traditional Bulgarian food. We had a really lovely ski instructor who took us out to try the local cuisine.
Bansko was quiet because of the weather.
There were many warnings and practical advice about theft and lots of advice given about swapping skis with fellow skiers to minimise the risk. As beginners we just hired our skis and had absolutely no problems - but we stayed up at the top and ate between our ski lessons, with our instructor who was absolutely lovely.
I think Bansko will be changing but that is the nature of tourism.
