Money Exchange at Sofia Airport

Can anyone tell me if rates at Sofia airport are competitive and what commission they charge. We are undecided whether to change a small amount in the UK or at the airport on arrival as we may be quite late arriving at Bansko and will probably want to hit the bars asap.

airport rates are not to good,you could change money when you check in to the hotel

Problem is we may not get to hotel until 23.00 or later so to save time may get some here. Thanks.

i did this in pamps while i was sighning my name in,they changed my money took all of 1 minute,next time i changed with hotel porter better rates but you have to barter can be a laugh

I did notice that there were 2 different rates in Sofia airport last time I was there. The lower rate was in the arrivals part at 2.4 the better rate was in the departures part at 2.67. Problem was that this was in the bank there and I expect it would be closed if you are landing late in the day.

Thanks Dave. I think we will take a small amount with us and then change at the hotel.

the bigger hotels (Samakov, Rila, Olymp for eg) have 24 hour money change. The rates aren't too bad. The local bank will give you the best rate available but if you need some cash for Buzz Bar when you arrive change a tenner at the hotel and it'll last you till 5am when they chuck you out. When you wake up 2 days later you can go to the bank..unless it's a Sunday..back to the hotel money change...onto Francos...101 Cocktails...Buzz Bar at 5am ....wake up....

I was in Borovets last week and you get the best rates from the Hotels there. Much better than the UK.

rates definately not competitive you can get better in uk!
