I think you have to pay less if you are a total beginner cos the ski school costs less, nowt to do with the kit as far as I know. It might be due to less experienced instructors (I'm pretty sure its not though), or total beginners get cheaper lift passes as you won't be using them for a couple of days down on the nursery slopes.
First day is a free for all, they just ask you your boot ...

First day is a free for all, they just ask you your boot size and then give you kit with those size boots in. If you want to change them they probably will but they will might make you wait until they've got everyone else out of the way first.
I'm told all the skis are new in Pamp this year anyway.
