Plovdiv airport has come in for a bit of stick from a few first timers this year, so be aware of exactly what it is, and more importantly exactly what it is not.

It is a semi converted military base that was open for the sole purpose of cutting down transfer times to resorts during the winter.

It is not a commercial airport as we know it and you will not find shops or dining facilities there. It does however knock off 2 and a half hours transfer to resorts compared to Sofia and that suits me fine.

So for the short time you are there, just realise that it has been opened to save you time, albeit probably the most basic airport you will ever see in your lives.
