UNICEF'S RESPONSE TO BBC DOCUMENTARY
18:14 Mon 19 Nov 2007 - Spasena Baramova

The recent BBC documentary 'Bulgaria's Abandoned Children', which showed the horrible living conditions in a social care home for children with disabilities in Bulgaria's Mogilino made UNICEF take action, unicef.org.uk said.

A plan has been developed by the Bulgarian government to be implemented in partnership with UNICEF and an alliance of NGO's.

In the short term perspective UNICEF would provide assistance to improve the quality of immediate care for children living in the institution and would bring in specialists to meet the children's needs – physical and psychological.

In the long term, UNICEF would assist the assessment of services available in the region, to find appropriate alternatives for care for the children, including foster homes, unicef.org.uk said.

UNICEF also requested that Bulgaria's government provided information on the conditions in other institutions for children with disabilities.

UNICEF supported the development of policies in this area and put forward recommendations. It supported a project for the development of foster care so that more children from institutions could be placed in a family environment, unicef.org.uk said.

Now that is an extremely hopeful response to the desperate situation shown in last nights bbc2 documentary, that programme certainly made us question our desire for cheap ski holidays in Bulgaria.

Serjo,
There is hope for these children now and that probably would not have happened if this programme was not made. These children clearly do need help, any civilised person can see that.

We (British) show documentary's on TV about our own country to highlight the wrong doings, Yes there is crime here but you would never see children in England left to starve and go insane.
What is more powerful than highlighting problems in the world through television.

You should be welcoming the help that is offered, not taking it as a personal insult.
You would rather no-one came to Bulgaria to help these kids? Let them just starve? Thats shocking.

I think it's you who needs help!

re: Possible help for abandoned children

in England there is same problem but is hidden from your government and an ordinary person will never know that exist. How many times have you seen a Bulgarian program about the English teenage pregnancy and how bad it is!! You are in a 1-st place .... in the World!!!
That’s mean high abortion rate and a lot of children without any parents. Ask yourself-WHERE ARE THEY,WHAT I KNOW ABOUT THEM, DO I HELP THEM -the answer is NO.
I am not saying that Bulgarian children don’t need help!

But ask yourself why BBC (government organisation which trying to manipulate all of you) made all this programs only about Bulgaria? (check bbc website and search for Bulgaria- the only thing to come up are Bad) Why they don’t go to Romania or Poland for instance. Ask some polish person about their orphaned children-same situation as Bulgaria. Go to Romania -you wont come back alive if you travel from border to border thru rural roads. But Bulgaria is a big nail in British government eyes so they make anything possible to put us in a wrongdoing.

Serjoe you seem like an idiot. The attitude on here is to help the children not get into the politics of it all.

Serjoe, I don't think you have woken up to freedom of the press yet. They decide what is the flavour of the day then they report on it. I know it is not nice to have things reported about your country that don't show it in a good light, but if it highlights the plight of the children and some good comes from it, it shows the programme was worthwhile.
You don't have to tell me we have problems in the UK, I'm sick of reading about them.

Serjoe,
What you also need to take on board is the fact that there are so many people on this web site alone that really do care and really want to help your children, have a think about it, ok.. were not going to make a dramatic difference but every little bit helps towards solving these problems, show a little GRATITUDE towards these people.

OK guy's interesting topic but let's not turn this into a political debate. I do not want to have to start deleting comments. Perhaps time to wrap this up and move on.

This board really surprises me sometime, I have no idea if Serjoe is genuinie or not but he has put his point of view across which the majority of the people on the board disagree with, but what do some people do, insult him.
Please remember in the UK we have had freedom of speech for a lone time now, but this is not the case in many countries around the world. I had the pleasure of living in Eastern Europe in the late 80's and was actually in Berlin when wall came down.

There are many generations of people still alive that were brain washed to believe that everyting was rosey in their country when it was obvious to the outside world that it wasn't. I remember watching East German TV where they should their county up as the place to be and then you would see a documentry about urban deprivation in some UK city.
Insulting someone you disagree with is not the solution, education is the solution.
And to Serjoe I would say that no one is attempting to discredit your country, they are trying to do a little bit to help.
