Hi
First time making this journey and was wondering what the road is like once you turn off the main Greece/Sofia highway and head towards Razlog/Bansko.
Anything we should be aware of. We will arrive on the 3rd in the afternoon - according to the weather reports we have chosen the coldest day to arrive (shock for my kids that rarely get cold!) and I was wondering - if there is fresh snow (expected Saturday night) is the road quickly accessible or dangerous from ice!

Do people use snow chains in extreme cold (as predicted Sunday) in case of ice? Thanks and HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Its a new road (or at least newly renovated), gritted and cleared when snowing don't worry. You are obliged to carry chains by law so have them in the car - you can buy them at any gas station - but you only use them in deep snow. In ice just drive slow in low revs and make sure you have winter tyres on your car or the slightest bit of snow will have you off the road.
The road is renovated and generally well cleared from snow /when there is one/. As for the ice - typically they treat it more with sand and salt and less with chemicals but you shouldn't have any problems. Make sure you have winter tires and a pair of snow-chains. The snow-chains are putted on only when it is quite snowy /you can put them for example when the road is completely white with snow/.
Thanks everyone - hubby won't put winter tyres on - so what will be will be (no one uses these tyres in Greece) and said if it means paying out for new tyres then there's no point in coming! He pointed out that many Greeks make this journey and he highly doubts that anyone uses winter tyres. Even the guy in the garage said it's not a good idea as the roads from Greece will ruin the thread in the journey as it's just not cold enough - who am I to argue with them!?
Anyway all being well - we ...

M+S are fine - in fact better than snow tyres. I went to have mine changed to winter tyres and the fitter asked why I was downgrading. Don't know why you have them in Greece though. You must have chains in the car by law (I don't as they ran out of my size) as the police can fine you but its pretty unlikely. Anyway, they are around 20 euro.
