i agree with taking a turn off pirin street near the old town to find the best mehanas. theres a good place down the main street (past the english bar at the crossroad) and down the stret on the left. theres a guy outside with a traditional blanket around him (bit of a jokder - im not referring to George, the guy at the place further up the street). You have to go into a courtyard in the place and then to the restaurant upstairs. we've passed it so many times and not bothered but found ...

You have to go into a courtyard in the place and then to the restaurant upstairs. we've passed it so many times and not bothered but found it was the best place we visited all holiday the last time we were away. avoid anything fast food, british related and near the gondola entrance - too pricey! The more rustic normally the better and more value for money (if you arent too fussy about trying foreign food that is). i wandered into the Strazhite hotel during a stay a year or two ago - just to have a look around for future reference. the reception is impressive. the place looks nice and clean and the restaurant seemed to have a nice set up but i didnt eat there (how sad am i but i am v.curious and need to see as much as i can when im away to the embaressement of my friends and family). you should be in for a nice stay. i tried the mish mash a few years ago in the cafe halfway down pirin street
(prob just about opposite the icerink). its nice if you are ok with tomatoes and onion as they seemed to dominate this egg based dish which i did enjoy at the time. the said cafe is fantasic value and a lot of the worker seem to congregate there which is a good sign - but a bit smokey!the waitress and owner were great but the waitress smoked at the bar and drank out of a straw and full size orange carton whilst serving - but thats so Bankso, so Bulgaria i guess warts an all!
