Looking to buy a ski jacket this year, got a good one last year but it did not breath!! lovely sauna's to be had every day on the slopes!!
So what are good inexpensive makes??
How on earth did you manage to get a full refund on a used jacket??? What shop did you buy it from?
The answer to your question is a rather long and complex one as a lot depends on how aggressive you ski/board and therefore how much energy you exert (hotter you will get) during a typical days skiing. The general rule of thumb is that the more active you are (genuinely), the less of a "battle armour" jacket you will need. People tend to get far too hung up with Gore-tex for it's name but ...

The general rule of thumb is that the more active you are (genuinely), the less of a "battle armour" jacket you will need. People tend to get far too hung up with Gore-tex for it's name but don't really understand the science behind the product. A lot of my knowledge of the limitations and technicalities of waterproof and windproof membranes comes from many years of mountaineering all over the world in some of the most extreme temperatures.
My advice would be to consider some of the "middle market" makes and membranes as they will breath a great deal more. They may not offer the same amount of windproof, showerproof and warmth, but then how many showers are you going to have to deal with on a ski slope and the warmth should come from a suitable fleece underneath the jacket anyway.
I still belive in the tried and tested method of layering. At least then, when it gets too hot or too cold, you can add or remove a layer to regulate your comfort temperature.
Shop was Matalan.
(cant remember jacket manufacturer, but it was a respected brand name)
Refund given as it "was not fit for the purpose it was sold for"
I have found a nice Trespass jacket that has all the pockets, hood, bits etc, is fairly lightweight, has taped seams, is breathable, & showerproof, just need to find it in my size though.
Any other brand names that are good?
(more important, any that are NOT good!)
I use "Lowe Alpine" thermals, which are excellent IMO, ...

I use "Lowe Alpine" thermals, which are excellent IMO, and "Peter Storm" fleeces, which are also very good IMO.
I am fairly active on the slopes (only Ski) but I am a little skinny, so although I keep warm while moving, I need good insulation/windproofing when at rest.
Just make sure that the fleece is breathable! Windstopper fleeces are more expensice but do not breathe at all so it makes a three layer clothing system useless.
James,
The Trespass one was in TK Maxx, hopefully they will have more soon.
Mr B,
The Peter Storm ones are very good, very warm, but no sweat at all. Even found that if they get wet, it just sits on the outside, and does not penetrate through to me, which is nice
I secong the TK Max comments - girlfriend got a funky Dare2Be there the other week for £40. I got a great HH reduced from £180 to £60 - well impressed with both.
