Skiing in Feb - Borovets or Bansko

Hi, Ive been skiing to Borovets 3 times in the last two years. We are looking at going in the middle of February and cant decide on whether to go to Boro again or try Bansko. Im assuming that by then there will be plenty of snow at both, but am I right in thinking that Bansko is a little more 'snow-sure', if there is such a thing at the moment!

Any advice would be much appreciated!

The main reason for going to Bulgaria in the first place is price - if money wasnt an object then Austria would be great but we can get flights, half board accomodation, ski hire and lift pass for £387 per person - you would never get anywhere near that in Austria and all the time that is the case, Bulgaria will always be the most viable option moneywise!

Paul,
I agree....money is always the issue for me and prob most people who choose Bulgaria.
I have friends who go to Canada, France, Austria and Italy etc and I can only ever dream once I have looked at the prices in the brochures.
Ski Gear is always from the 'sale rail' aswell! lol
Not pleading poverty or owt here and am pleased to be able to go at all!
Hey-Ho Bulgaria it is....again! Very Happy

Paul,
I dont know how much snow making there is in Borovets, as they claim 100% in Bansko mid feb should be good for snow, the base by then is normally 100cm plus, the slopes are quite different at bansko and the town is I believe different, certainly the old town in Bansko is very nice.
Personally I would choose Bansko, but I am biased, I have not been to the other bulgarian resorts but have been to bansko 4 times.
As for Austria, i was there in March last year, and the skiing was better ...

I have fancied a change by going to Bansko - its more expensive for the week we want to go but then £100 is worth it if it means a weeks skiing.

Was looking at the Lion Hotel (Bansko) - has anyone been there and, if so, what is it like?

The Lion is a really good hotel. Spent a week there last year and really enjoyed it.

Cool

I read a report recently highlighting the cheapest (best value ??) areas to ski for a family of four, staying in a medium hotel, taking into account lift and ski packages, and allowing general spending....
Bansko was shown as the cheapest area by just over 25% against the nearest area, which ironically was Ellmau in Austria. The total price came in at just over £1100.00 compared to Ellmau at just under £1500.00...
Personally my feelings are that the prices here could be considered as cheap ...

Personally my feelings are that the prices here could be considered as cheap as five years ago, especially when eating and drinking...
As for being snow sure, is anywhere ??? it was raining in Val`d'isere the other morning, and some lower Austrian and Italian resorts are reporting very poor snow... Feb should be as snow sure as any month, never in my seven years of coming to Bansko have i not seen some decent skiing in feb. Please realise it is half term 14th to 21st, and it will be really busy, hopefully not as busy as this Christmas/new year Mad but still busy...
The lion is a classy hotel, not to far from the gondola but they have shuttle buses, top of the town but near to JJ Murphys and Irish, Friendly bar etc... and maybe 10-15 min walk into the old town...
There are 120 cannons in resort, and even through this very poor period people have still been skiing right back to the town, and save for the queuing Mad there has been skiing on the mountain for all levels Razz
You makes your choice, and takes your chances Wink

re: Skiing in Feb - Borovets or Bansko

Thanks Steve. Ive only been to Borovets during half term and new year as my girlfriend is a teacher so busy slopes is normal to me!

Im going with my brother and nephew this time but he is going to take a couple of days off school. We are looking at going on Weds 10th for a week and have got a really good DIY price.

Am I right in thinking that you offer transfers from Sofia to Bansko? If so, would you be able to give me an idea of cost please (email is paul@[email protected]) ...

This may not be the norm but the best snow I have ever had was in Aviemore, bitter cold sparkling powder so cold you could not make snowballs, it just would not stick together, very closely followed by Borovets, we had a big dump of fine squeeky powder the second day we were there, Had a fantastic week.

I have had a good time sking in the Alps and the Pyrenees but anyone who looks down their nose at some resorts cos they are not so snowsure needs to remember that mountains dont read ...
