Flying to Greece for the sake of reaching western Bulgaria unless you have friends or relatives in Gr is much more time consuming.
Makedonia airport to Tessaloniki then bus to BG (long wait and hastle) at the border, then connection to eigher Bansko or Borovets take long hours and it will work dearer.
Even if it slightly more expensive to fly to BG (which I doubt it very much) I will fly everytime as close as possible(If from UK easyjet and wizzair or from europe- wizzair or german or ...

I enjoy my short time in greece spring, the different lifestyle from Solun and the time on the Bazar. I prepair the trains, but thats history!I will be fine and have a perfect time in Melnik, with wine tradition and bulgarian hostage

Thats true, I visit Melniklast time two years ago in March, not really spring icecold nights but Mechanas with cosy fireplaces, not more winter, first trees are blewing and 17` sunshine. Just a smal number of tourist most day trips from Greece
