Taking your own Skis & Boots

I've finally bought my own skis & boots this year so I've no previous experience of travelling with my own equipment. I've paid the travel operator's supplement to take them with me & I was wondering if my boots will be included in the normal (20kg) baggage allowance or are they treated seperately as with the skis?

I'm travelling to Bansko with Balkan Holidays on Christmas Eve, flying with Bulgaria Air from Manchester.

No, the extra ski carriage you paid is for one pair of ski's only. Your boots will count towards your overall 20kg baggage allowance. I don't find it a problem if I pack carefully i.e. don't take too many "just in case" items.

re: Taking your own Skis & Boots

checking my ticket with Crystal it states:

"ski/snowboard bags must contain skis and snowboards ONLY and must not weigh more than 5kgs.
So looks like the boots are classed with Crystal as your normal 20k - hope that helps". you could always shove a few socks etc in the ski bag to make up the 5kg - doubt they would check whats inside.

know this does not apply to you - but may be useful to other people - it also states:
"its possible that ski carriage not pre-booked will be declined ...

We've always travelled with Inghams and put our boots in with the skis and never been charged extra.Going with First Choice so will be interesting to see what happens

Thanks for the prompt replies. I thought that was the case but wanted to check just in case I could bring some extra goodies on the return trip.

Perhaps I should wear the boots on the flights to cut down on my checked baggage weight? lol.

What do you need these things for - there will be no snow when you get there! Take rollerskis with you instead...

Most boarders I know use their board bag as a suitcase and stuff it with absolutely everything! We always fill our board bag up with other bits and pieces and have never had a problem.

re: Taking your own Skis & Boots

Last year Balkan at Manchester were saying that boots didn't count as normal luggage unless you could hide them in your suitcase or you had paid ski kit carriage charge of £17. Lots of rushed re-packing in the queue, but some of us still couldn't get them in our small perfectly packed cases and had to take the hit. the staff were pointing to the small print in the brochure that included boots.

No problem with Balkan at East Midlands last Feb - just put boots through as separate items.
