The Beers of Bulgaria

Hi all,

We are off out to Bansko in a couple of weeks time and would like to try some of the local lagers and ales. Are there any suggestions for those we should try and the bars and restaurants in Bansko that can supply them? Which are the most popular and which are harder to find?

Thanks,
Grey

I like the guiness myself Booze Booze but usually stick to kamenitsa for a local lager type, you can get it almost everywhere

re: The Beers of Bulgaria

Please, much to difficult....
Pirinska, local beer, drink till you fall over, can effect some peoples constitutions, made with local water Mad
Kamenitsa, local beer, same as....
Shumensko, brewed in Plovdiv, comes as a dark as well, similar, drink till you fall over, hangover from hell...
Zagorka, premier beer, lovely if followed with Rakia chasers, not for the faint hearted, forget about the couple of days after...
Ariana, nice beer, comes in a dark as well as light beer, cheap rocket ...

Ariana, nice beer, comes in a dark as well as light beer, cheap rocket fuel, tends to get you in the same state as Zagorka...
There are a couple more but these are the popoular ones....
Basically, for Brits in Bg, the more you drink, the more you save... it has been heard that some going home (normally in an ambulance) have actually been paid at the border Booze Booze Booze Booze Booze

re: The Beers of Bulgaria

Kaminitza - nice ligh beer (lager) which you can drink all day long & from about 2 years ago in beersof the world you can get it in a big Tesco UK.

Zagorka - this is like wife beater (Stella) very strong flavour

Zagorka - wife beater x2... fair bit stronger

Pirinski - very local beer and its the cheapest by half the rice of the above two I kid you not. I like it it is strong and Ive ha plenty of them to know that it does have an odd aroma of raw meat (red meat). You can get 500ml ...

Steve

Last time I looked the Kamenitsa Brewery was in Plovdiv, not particularly local to Bansko me thinks Wink
And judging by the name, My guess would be that Shumensko is from Shumen Wink
Definatley agree that there is too meny beers to choose from but my preference is Zagorka all the way, I don't touch Kamenitza as I like to wake up with a hang over and realise how little I have spent Booze Booze

re: The Beers of Bulgaria

Hi Nick, there is a local Pirinsko brewery in Blagoevgrad, opposite the KAT station, and that is particularly local to us, i did confuse that with Kamenitsa, im sorry...
What i did not realise was that Shumensko is not brewed either in Blagoevgrad but is distributed through the Pirinsko brewery at Blagoevgrad, as both brands are effectively Carlsburg (BG), its heritage as you so rightly said is Shumen...
On investigation i find that Zagorka reigns from Stara Zagora (funny that ??) though ...

On investigation i find that Zagorka reigns from Stara Zagora (funny that ??) though it does mention that some brewing happens in Sofia as well, along with Ariana...
Basically Heineken and Carlsburg have tied up the most popular brands with Inbev holding Kamenitza and three local beers...
Having now stood in the corner for an hour with my dunces hat on, im going out to put my new found knowledge to the test Razz Booze

re: The Beers of Bulgaria

What are my chances of getting hold of some real beer i.e not lager? I'm thinking pretty slim.

re: The Beers of Bulgaria

In Sofia there are a number of micro breweries which sell beer of reasonable quality mainly pilsner and wheat beers but I dont know of places outside Sofia.

There is a pub in Sofia where you have the beertap at your table and you just help yourself. It does have a meter though and you settle up at the end.
