First time skiing last Jan in Pamps. Stayed in the Orlovets loved it ,night life , like nowhere else, endless. One thing put me off though, because that the conditions were really grim (no snow, bad ice) when we did get on the green run I found i couldn't stop and kept having to hurl myself down at about 90 miles per hr (not good at my age) I was very confident at first, i had good balance (I can ice skate),I could ski from side to side on the nursery slopes, but after falling really ...

What i really need to know is, if there had been prpoer snow conditions would i have been able to stop and what is the best way to get my confidence back. I really loved skiing and I want to go again (as does my son) and we all loved the apres ski
If you managed on bad conditions you will be able to in good conditions. You will only need to get to grips eith it and you will then be able to enjoy it. It might be a good idea to have a private lesson if you can as a one to one with a good instructor will make all the difference. Keep trying its worth it in the end.

Being confident goes a long way when skiing, especially when the conditions aren't ideal. I would suggest that have a few private lessons to teach you how to control your ski's in any snow condition will help you a lot. Having sharp edges will also help you massively to control your ski's when the conditions under ski are bullet proof or compact snow.
My advice to you would be to not associate stopping with launching yourself at whatever speed into the snow as you will only develop bad ...

My advice to you would be to not associate stopping with launching yourself at whatever speed into the snow as you will only develop bad habits instead of focussing on your confidence to put into action what you have learned at ski school or private lessons.
Stick with it, get a few private lessons and concentrate on your technique and you will see just how confident you really can be when you realise just how easy it is.
Then, enjoy the great Bulgarian nightlife and Kamanitza as a well deserved reward(sp?)
hi Debs I was in the same position last year, I took lessons but it went in one ear and out the other and 1st time attemoting the green run took me 3hrs top to bottom. However next time down with a crowd we met, my confidence soared and the fear factor went. I found best way to learn was get out do it on your own and expect a few falls on the way.
I also had my first ski lessons on the green "ice run" in pamps Jan 2007, It took an age to get from top to bottom but our instuctor said that if we could ski down on ice that we would have no trouble what so ever on propper snow, cant wait to test her theory in feb 2008 !!
my wifes instructer wouldnt take her down the bottom section on green run, so i took her down after giving her a bit advice and she coped easily even though it was icy. her group went from top to mid station, and we passed them three times on the way.a few chocolate brandys and a bit trust go a long way, she is now addicted and like the rest of us dreams about skiing(mind some of the dreams she has are odd_) lol wifes instructor was maria local girl with 7 year old twins, took my 7 year ...

Dont worry Debra - I was there in Jan and then again in March when we had 1m of fresh snow - it is so much easier on fresh snow - your skies go where you want them to and it doesnt hurt if you fall over!
My wife went down the green run on her 1st ever day skiing on the fresh snow
Hiya Debra, When I first snowboarded I had a bad fall on my 2nd day and really hurt my wrist. I was just above the mid-station at the time, and I had a choice
1) Keep boarding down to the bottom
2) Get on the lift
I kept boarding and although it really knocked my confidence, by the end of the week it was coming back. I find if I concentrate more on technique rather than speed I lose the fear factor. Also, a few hours on an indoor slope over here before you go helps.

I have only skied 3 years now. Your title is right, it is the fear factor. I do not think icy snow is any harder, but it sure hurts less with soft snow. I suppose iwas lucky, learnt on the soft, so less falls on the ice. But in my opinion confidence is all.
