Great..it seems the Labour partys Nazi policies are spreading across Europe quickly. Soon you won't be allowed to have sh*t that stinks in fear of offending someone.
Typically the public gets no vote in such matters.....

Just got back from boro and was amased at how many people smoke there. I do feel some kind of control is needed as we couldn't go anywhere which was smoke free. A total ban on the otherhand seems a little extreme, especially when you consider that at the moment there appears to be no restrictions. People seem to smoke everywhere and none of the restuarants seem to have a non smoking area.re: To all you smokers out there...
You can still smoke outdoors - it's a ban on smoking in restaurants / hotels etc...J

I havent read all the other replies, but I am a smoker, and i applaud this law.
I hope there is no-one smoking anywhere near my kids when i go.
I dont want my kids breathing in smoke.
I dont smoke in my house and i expect to be able to take them where there are other kids and not have to put up with them inhaling it there.
Considering how dangerous passive smoking is, and how vulnerable young children's lungs are, no parent would wish their child to be subjected in this way to ...

Can I just add, BTW I have no objections to people smoking outside, in the open air.I'm talking about indoors, where the kids are going to be breathing copious amounts in.
If anyone is smoking indoors, I for one will be grassing them up if they have no respect for children.

I agree, there is always a door to walk out of in any pub/restaurant to smoke.It'll make you think twice going out into the cold...which will make you smoke less, which will mean you have more $$ which means more beer!!
So stop the moaning because these laws are going to be worldwide in the next few years, as New Zealand has just implemented a ban, and the UK are headed there shortly...

Just a shame it's completely impossible to have a rational discussion about it since the issue has been so heavily politicised - mostly by New Labour actually, who lacking any actual political policies (remember them?) have have decided that the way to connect with people is to play to their fears over their health.
As it happens there have been dozens of passive smoking studies, but despite what you read in the papers the question is far ...

As it happens there have been dozens of passive smoking studies, but despite what you read in the papers the question is far from resolved: many have found no link, those that have found a link have found it to be tiny. Bear in mind that non-smokers have a tiny risk of getting lung cancer, so even 2-3 times increase is still a tiny risk, and quite difficult to measure - the actual increase in risk is about 15%, but again that is 15% increase from tiny. Try and put it in perspective.
Oh, and by the way, the hysterical campaigns against "binge drinking", (otherwise known as 'a good night out'), including on the spot fines and less evidence needed to shut places down are softening you up for more controls on how you enjoy your other poisons.

By contrast, in a population which consumes Japanese seafood (which contains Arsenic) this will cause 12 cases of cancer, where there are traces of natural Arsenic in drinking water, this will cause five cases; eating mushrooms will cause three cases.
