To wax or not to wax?

Hi,

I am using a new pair of skis when i go out this season. They are brand new and have not been waxed. What advantages/disadvantages are there to having them waxed?

Also, do i buy the wax and do it myself or do you have to get it done professionally

Thanks

re: To wax or not to wax?

Buy a bottle of zordoz not wax for starters. Liquid teflon for added boost Wink Not cheap though but the little bottle doe's go a long way.

Depends on your ability Phil. There should be no real reason why you need to wax new ski's but it will make them faster. Personally I would ski with them as they are for a couple of days to get used to them then get them waxed locally. It should only cost you about 5 levs.

To wax or not to wax ?????? Wax !!!!!!!!!
HIgh density Petex bases, in fact all densities of Petex are designed to be waxed. The base is in effect a sponge, Petex comprises of thousands of pores that when heated (or chemically) will expand and absorb wax. If you do not wax, the snow that melts beneath the ski will be drawn up into the base, causing `stickyness' which in some cases will make initiating a turn more difficult and overall impede your skiing. If you continue not waxing your skis it is actually possible that the base will shrink away from the edges and completely ruin the skis. New skis will have been factory waxed, more of a storage wax, definately suggest getting them stripped then re-waxed to suit the conditions you are skiing.

re: To wax or not to wax?

Zordoz is not a replacement for a hot wax, it's good for a couple of hours or a rub when out and you need to get a bit more speed in slushy mids afternoons. Confused

Steve

(Or anyone) Is there anywhere to get this done in Bansko? And does it depend on the type of skis i have (They are new and not sure what material etc)

Inside gondola base station, big ski / board waxing place, perhaps not the best, people will have their own opinion but we use them as it's fast and rather handy.
