Given the teachers insistence on having inset days in term time, high prices in half term and my view that a week with his family learning to ski, being in the fresh air, getting experience of another country etc. is just as educational as drawing pirates then I'll be taking all my kids out again this March :-)
Totally agree with you Jez - the social experiences of learning a new skill in a foreign country with his family are priceless.
Looking back - many years ago, I realize now that I would have been a neuclear scientist earning millions had my parents not decided to take me out of school for a week and take me to Cornwall on holiday.
It will get more difficult as they get older due to SATS etc. but even then it annoys me as most of it seems geared to stats rather than what is educationally best for the kids.
Don't get me wrong - I fully support my kids' school and the teachers but it sticks in my throat when the system seems to think they have the right to lord it over you and insist you only take your kids away when they deem it acceptable.
We always ask permission and fill in the right forms but if they ...
hehe.

I totally agree , just had this discussion with my sons head teacher. Education does not just centre around school, skiing and experiencing other cultures is important too.
John,Cheryl and James
We took both of ours out of school for family holidays - usually the first or last week of term up until they started GCSE courses and both managed to get good degrees at university, proving that it does no harm whatsover and saved us a whole lot of cash!
although the comment about experiencing other cultures is probably a bit of a joke in a ski resort, one would probably get more experience of "other" cultures on a day trip to London if you see what I mean.
in fact for many children in UK taking them out of school would probably be a break from experience other cultures (i.e. the exact opposite of the comment).
